Altoona Curve News Release
ERIE, Pa. - The Altoona Curve suffered its first series loss of the season at the hands of the Erie as the SeaWolves topped the Curve, 8-2, in the series finale on Sunday at Jerry Uht Park. Erie's Andrew Oliver (1-1) earned the win while Curve starter Justin Wilson (1-1) takes the loss.
Altoona actually scored first in the game when Miles Durham hit a sacrifice fly right that brought in Jim Negrych in the first inning. It was the seventh RBI of the season for Durham and after half an inning, it was 1-0 Curve.
Wilson would work through the first two innings without any real damage but run into some trouble in the third. After a leadoff single by Jeff Kunkel, Shawn Roof doubled to put runners at second and third with no one out. A groundout by Andy Dirks brought Kunkel home to tie the game at one and a wild pitch by Wilson to Wilkin Ramirez allowed Roof to score from third to put Erie ahead, 2-1.
They would make it 5-1 after a three-run fifth where they scored three runs on just one hit. Wilson walked the first two batters of the inning and then made a fielding error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Roof to load the bases. Another Dirks groundout brought a run in to make it, 3-1. Wilkin Ramirez followed with the only hit of the inning, which drove in Kunkel to increase the lead to three.
Roof would score the final run of the frame when he broke for home as the Curve were throwing out Ramirez trying to steal second.
All told, Wilson tossed 4.2 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts. His counterpart Oliver allowed just one run on three hits in six innings with three strikeouts for Erie. Derek Hankins worked 2.1 innings and gave up three runs for Altoona. Michael Dubee also got some action in, pitching the eighth frame and allowing just one hit.
The Curve added a run in the top of the eighth inning when Jordy Mercer doubled in Alex Presley with one away for his fourth RBI of the season.
After dropping two-of-three in Erie, Altoona (7-3) heads to Akron for the first time in 2010. RHP Mike Crotta (1-0, 0.69) will take the game ball for the Curve while LHP Scott Barnes (0-1, 3.24) will start for Akron (6-5). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. from Canal Park. Radio coverage will begin at 6:35 p.m. on flagship station ESPN Radio, 1430 - WVAM and Altoona Curve Radio Network affiliates.
