Quintana Blasts Birds Past Snakes, 5-4

Sioux Falls, SD - Wil Quintana hit is 10th and 11th homers of the season to lift the Sioux Falls Canaries (22-10) to a 5-4 victory over the St. Joe Blacksnakes (8-24) on Tuesday night.

The Blacksnakes started strong with a two-run first inning. Casey Gordon led off with a walk and scored on a double down the left field line by Jake Whitesides to put the Snakes ahead, 1-0. Whitesides came around the bases to score on an RBI single by Chad Sosebee. After one inning, the Snakes led 2-0.

St. Joe tacked on another run in the second inning. Casey Gordon drew his second walk of the game, and then stole second base. Andy Wilson drove in Gordon on a bloop single to centerfield, giving the Blacksnakes a 3-0 lead.

The Birds came back in the home half of the second. Matt Imwalle hit his eighth home run of the season to draw the Birds one run closer, 3-1.

The Snakes took the run back in the top of the third. David Fowler singled; then stole second. Sosebee doubled, driving Fowler in from second base to give the Snakes a three run lead, 4-1.

The Canaries rallied in the sixth. Angelo Fermin started the Birds with a walk. James Shanks followed with a ground ball to third base. The third baseman's throw to second pulled the second baseman off the bag and allowed Fermin to reach safely. Abner Arroyo bounced into a fielder's choice that left runners on the corners for Quintana. Quintana hit a three run bomb, his 10th homer of the season, to tie the game, 4-4.

In the eighth inning, Quintana hit his second home run of the game, 11th of the season, to give the Birds the 5-4 win.

Lenny Bays (4-0) earned the win by pitching two shutout innings in relief for the Birds. Vinny DeChristafaro (0-5) suffered the loss for the Blacksnakes. Jerrod Fuell earned his, league-leading, 10th save of the season.

The Birds and Blacksnakes cap off their series on Wednesday, June 13. Wednesday is "Mascot Mania" presented by Dakota Costume.
