June 12, 2007 - American Association (AA)
Coastal Bend Aviators News Release
Kevin Hull went seven strong innings allowing no earned runs and Coastal Bend got a big debut from newly acquired left fielder Matt Spencer to rout Pensacola 8-1.
Hull scattered 5 hits and worked out of a bases loaded situation in the seventh to improve to 3-2 on the season. While he walked 3 batters, he had good command and had hitters guessing all night. Pensacola had just one player with more than one hit, and Pelican hitters were a combined 5 for 26 on the evening.
The Aviators scored seven times against starter Scott Vander Meer with 3 runs in the second, 2 in the third, and 2 in the fourth. Spencer, batting second in the order and seeing his first action since being acquired in a trade from Fort Worth, hit a double in the fourth and a solo homerun to left center in the sixth. It was just the 8th homerun of the season for the Aviators and gave Coastal Bend an 8-0 lead. Leadoff man Brian Fryer and number three hitter James Lofton went a combined 4 for 7 with a walk, 2 RBI and a run scored. First baseman Grant Richardson widened a 3-0 to 5-0 with a 2-RBI double in the third. Designated hitter Bryon Smith continued his hot hitting and went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored.
Tim Haines and Miguel Martinez each worked an inning of scoreless relief. With the victory, Coastal Bend has won 5 of their last 7 ballgames and improve to 13-17 on the season. Pensacola drops to 9-20. The two teams will go at it again tomorrow night with lefthander Colin Young (1-3) taking the ball for the Pelicans against Aviators righty J.R. Pickens (1-0) in the second game of a three game series.
First pitch at Fairgrounds Field is 7:05pm. The game can also be heard locally on 1070 AM KOPY or online at www.aviatorsbaseball.com.
