Edmonton Trappers News Release
First baseman Robb Quinlan was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, a double, a home run and three RBI as the Salt Lake Stingers downed the Edmonton Trappers 12-3 Monday night at Franklin Covey Field in Salt Lake City. Quinlan, who was the 2002 Pacific Coast League Most Valuable Player, struggled in a recent series in Edmonton, going 3-for-16 with no home runs and no RBI in four games. The Stingers began the evening tied for second in the league with a .290 team batting average and upped that number by banging out 16 hits. Edmonton's starting pitching staff entered the night with a stellar 2.60 ERA in the previous 13 games, but right-hander Hansel Izquierdo (2-2) was rocked for six runs in the first inning on Monday and surrendered eight runs in total in only 2.2 innings to put an end to that streak. The Trapper pitching staff allowed 10 or more runs for the 10th time this season in the game, but despite the loss the club remains in first place in the North Division of the PCL. Edmonton and Salt Lake continue this three-game series on Tuesday night at Franklin Covey Field.
On June 12 Izquierdo allowed eight runs in the first inning of a 13-2 Trapper loss in Iowa. He came close to repeating that feat on this night as Salt Lake sent 11 men to the plate and scored six times on six hits in the first frame. Shortstop Adonis Harrison got things rolling for the Stingers with a leadoff single. Izquierdo then hit Trent Durrington with a pitch and yielded an RBI single to Quinlan that plated Harrison and moved Durrington to third. Left fielder Gary Johnson doubled, scoring Durrington and Quinlan. Izquierdo got the next two batters, but he couldn't retire Canadian Jeff Guiel, who singled to center field, plating Johnson with the fourth Salt Lake run. Wil Nieves followed with a double to left field that scored Guiel and Julio Ramirez reached on an infield single that allowed Nieves to come home with the final tally of the frame. Edmonton got one run back in the top of the third inning as second baseman Jake Thrower led off with a base hit to center field and eventually scored as Luis Figueroa bounced into a fielder's choice.
Guiel started the bottom of the third inning by drawing a walk off Izquierdo and Nieves followed with the second of what would be four hits on the night for the catcher to put runners at the corners. With one out Harrison plated Guiel with a sacrifice fly, Durrington singled and Quinlan followed with an RBI double. Ryan Balfe drew a walk to open the Trappers half of the fourth inning. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a single by Matt Cepicky and finally scored on a single by Scott Hodges. The Stingers plated two more runs in the bottom of the fourth off reliever Enmanuel Ulloa on RBI singles by Ramirez and Harrison and another run in the fifth on an RBI base hit by Nieves. Edmonton picked up their third and final run in the sixth inning when Hodges singled with two out and later scored on a single by Scott Sandusky. Quinlan capped the scoring in the bottom of the frame with a solo shot off Ulloa. Matt Hensley (5-9) struck out nine to earn the win. He allowed three runs, two earned, on 8 hits and one walk in 7.0 innings.
