Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE â After cruising through the first three innings, Nashville starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong ran into trouble in the fourth and fifth, surrendering seven runs to New Orleans over that two-inning span, in Nashville's 8-2 loss to the Zephyrs on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium. The loss snapped the Sounds' seven-game overall winning streak as well as their 12-game home winning streak.
Vogelsong started strong, fanning six in the first three innings and allowing only two singles. New Orleans' Alan Zinter and Colin Porter opened the fourth with a pair of singles and moved up one bag each on a Jason Alfaro sacrifice. Vogelsong intentionally walked Kyle Logan to face Mike Moriarty, who entered the game hitting just .161. Vogelsong fell behind 2-0 to Moriarty before the third baseman drilled the next pitch off the out-of-town scoreboard in left field for a grand slam, the second allowed by Vogelsong in 2003. The home run was Moriarty's second of the season, both coming against the Sounds.
The offensive onslaught continued for the Zephyrs in the following frame. With one out, New Orleans strung together four consecutive singles by Raul Chavez, Zinter, Porter, and Alfaro to plate two runs. A sacrifice fly by Logan plated the final run of the inning, leaving the Sounds trailing 7-0.
New Orleans added a run in the sixth when leadoff hitter Henri Stanley, the lone Zephyr not to hit in the three-run sixth, deposited reliever Duaner Sanchez's 0-2 delivery deep over the right-field wall for his fifth home run of season.
New Orleans knuckleballer Jared Fernandez lost his shutout bid with two outs in the ninth inning. Nashville's two-out rally started with singles by Rob Mackowiak and Aaron Holbert. Humberto Cota followed with a double into the left-field corner to score both runners. Z's reliever Rob Stanifer came in to record the final out.
Fernandez (6-8) went 8 2/3 innings, fanning three against no walks, for the win while Vogelsong (8-6) suffered the loss after allowing 11 hits and seven earned runs. The 11 hits equaled a season-high allowed by a Sounds pitcher.
The Sounds and Zephyrs will play a noon rubber match on Wednesday to decide the three-game series. Nashville's Dave Williams (2-1, 1.29) will make his second consecutive start against New Orleans. He tossed seven scoreless innings on July 3 in Nashville's 1-0 victory at Zephyr Field. Williams will be opposed by Zephyrs All-Star right-hander Doug Sessions (5-1, 2.18), who ranks 2nd in the PCL in ERA.
