New York Boulders News Release
RAMAPO, New York - After a back-and-forth game, the Quebec Capitales broke Saturday night's matchup open with five runs in the eighth to push themselves past the Rockland Boulders by a score of 9-4 in Can-Am League action at Provident Bank Park.
Jeff Helps earned the first RBI of the eighth with a bases loaded walk. Seth Henry then singled to plate two more for Quebec. Ben Gorang later singled in the fourth and fifth runs of the inning for the Capitales to leave them with the 9-4 lead.
Rockland struck first Saturday evening, but not without some help from the Quebec defense. Mike Richard singled to lead off for the Boulders, and then Ryan Mollica grounded out. On the ground out, Richard attempted to take third, and Quebec first baseman Rene Leveret threw the ball into left field, allowing Richard to score the first run of the game.
Quebec quickly tied the game in the top of the second. Helps smacked a single with Robert Wagner standing on second to bring him around to score and knot the game up at one.
The Boulders took the lead once again in the last of the fifth on the back of Ryde Rodriguez. Rodriguez took one for a ride over the short porch to lead off the inning and give the Boulders a 2-1 lead. This was his second home run of the season, both against Quebec.
Rockland starter John Muller found some trouble in the top of the sixth. With two runners on, Helps tripled to left field to give Quebec a 3-2 lead.
The red hot Ryan Mollica tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot to deep right field. The blast was Mollica's fourth in his last six games.
Brett Carroll came in to pitch the seventh inning for the Boulders, but he allowed the first three batters to reach base. Kent Worthington came in to limit the damage and struck out the first batter, but a run scored on a ground out to Ray Stokes to give Quebec the lead. The damage could have been greater, but Stokes made a great diving stop to keep the ball in the infield and catch the runner at first.
In the home half of the seventh, Scott Clement and Rodriguez both singled to start the inning for the Boulders. Stokes attempted to sacrifice bunt, but like the previous night, the ball was thrown away, allowing Clement to score and tie the ballgame at four runs apiece.
The Capitales then rallied for five runs in the eighth, and would hold on to that lead to earn the victory.
The Boulders (6-7, 25-34) will play the final game of a three-game series with the Quebec Capitales Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for the usual Sunday time of 5:05 p.m.
Rockland will send Jon Velasquez (4-4) to the mound Sunday afternoon to take on Quebec's Guillaume Duguay (3-0).
