Zuercher's Two-Hit Shutout Tops Federals 6-0

July 30, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Zach Zuercher had Worcester's first complete game of the 2011 season and Brendon Kelliher hit his first professional homerun in a 6-0 Worcester victory on Saturday night. Zuercher notched his ninth win of the year (9-4) and his third over the New York Federals. In 22 innings against the traveling team, Zach has allowed one run.

Each team was held scoreless through the first three innings, but Worcester broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Nick Salotti knocked a run in and another came home on a throwing error with the bases loaded.

The Tornadoes added another four runs in the fifth, with Chris Colabello hitting an RBI double, Mark Minicozzi driving a run in with a groundout and the two-run blast by Kelliher. All six runs (five earned) were charged to Luis Pardo (0-7), who didn't make it out of the fifth inning. Both relievers for New York blanked Worcester, with James Bierlein and Andy Watson both pitching for the second night in a row.

Alex Nunez's league-best 31-game on-base streak came to an end with an 0-of-5 night. Nunez has only been held off the basepaths in two games this season.

The final game of the weekend series is Sunday afternoon, as the Tornadoes send righty side-armer Ryan Bicondoa to the mound for a 4:05pm first pitch. The gates open at 3:00, and Tornadoes Pre-Game Live on USTREAM starts at 3:50. Nick Gagalis will have the call for game 61 of the 94-game regular season.
