Brockton Rox News Release

Newark, N.J. - The Brockton Rox (10-3, 36-23) won their fifth game in their last six road contests, mashing 13 runs on 16 hits in a 13-7 beating of the Newark Bears (7-6, 30-30) on Saturday night at Riverfront Stadium.

The Rox got off to a hot start against Jesse Estrada (3-6), batting around and scoring three runs on three hits and three walks in the first inning, followed by two more runs on three hits in the next frame, chasing Estrada after just an inning and 2/3.

Estrada took the loss allowing five runs on six hits, while walking four and striking out one.

Chris Valencia reached base and scored to open each of the first two innings as part of a 4-for-5 night at the plate, scoring a game high four runs and knocking in three. He also stole his league leading 31st base of the season.

Mike Torres and Melvin Falu both had big nights at the dish as well. Torres now batting .369 went 3-for-6 with two doubles, two runs scored and a game high tying four RBIs, while Falu picked up four singles and three RBIs and scored two runs.

The Rox abused the Bears bullpen, lighting up Victor Gonzalez, Matt Fitton and Chris Rollins for a combined eight runs on ten hits, while scoring in four of the final five frames.

Mike Smith (7-4) came away with the win, lasting six innings and allowing four runs on seven hits, while walking and striking out two. The runs against Smith came in the early going on back-to-back RBI base knocks from Ryan Walsh and Billy Alvino in the second inning, followed by a Danny Santiesteban two-run double in the third.

Santiesteban went 3-for-4 in the game with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Alvino went 2-for-4 and knocked in four.

Jimmer Kennedy, Steven Richard and Mark Rosen each turned in a scoreless frame for the Rox out of the bullpen, with the only damage in the later innings coming on the watch of Jack VanLeur.

VanLeur gave up a walk and two singles without recording an out in the eighth and exited before Alvino's bases-clearing triple that cut the lead to 10-7.

Brockton added three insurance runs in the ninth on the way to a comfortable victory, cementing the chance for a sweep in Sunday afternoon's series and roadtrip finale.

Veteran Freddy Flores gets the call in a 1:05 p.m. matinee, before the Rox return to Brockton to open a week long homestand beginning Monday night against the New York Federals at 7:05 p.m.
