Quakes Stumble in Road-Trip Finale

July 20, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Quakes' starter Patrick Corbin endured a tough fourth inning, as the Stockton Ports used an eight-run fourth to rally and beat the Quakes in the three-game series-finale, winning 9-8 at Monday night at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton.

Corbin, who worked three perfect innings coming into the fourth, struggled to get outs the second time through the order, as the Ports sent a total of 12 men to the plate and took an 8-4 lead.

A two-run homer from Grant Green put Stockton on the board at 4-2, Green's tenth of the year. Corbin retired the next two hitters and look to be on his way out of the inning. With two outs though, six consecutive hitters reached against Corbin. David Thomas' two-run single tied the game at 4-4. Kent Walton followed with a blooper to left, scoring two more to give Stockton the lead for good at 6-4. Jermaine Mitchell followed with a two-run homer to left-center, giving the Ports an 8-4 advantage and chasing Corbin from the game.

Stockton added another run in the sixth, as the Quakes' bullpen gave up their first run in 27 innings. Christian Scholl allowed a lead-off walk and Jeremy Berg allowed a two-out run-scoring single, as the Ports made it a 9-4 game.

The Quakes would rally to score the game's final four runs. Mike Trout tripled and score on a Luis Jimenez RBI groundout in the seventh, making it 9-5.

In the eighth, the Quakes scored three to make it a one-run game. Dillon Baird had a pinch-hit single to drive in Clay Fuller, making it 9-6. Jesus Campos' RBI groundout plated pinch-runner Kevin Ramos, making it 9-7. Trout followed with his third hit of the night, an RBI double down the right-field line to make it a one-run game at 9-8. Trout was thrown out trying to steal third though, bringing an end to the eighth-inning rally.

In the ninth, Stockton closer Paul Smyth got the first two outs, but struggled to record the final out of the game. Gabe Jacobo, who finished the game with three hits, singled to put the tying run on base. Fuller followed with what should have been a routine grounder to short. Green's throw to first was off the mark though, extending the inning for Castillo. Smyth buckled down and fanned Castillo on a 2-2 slider, earning his 16th save of the year to end the game.

Jacobo cracked a first-inning homer, tying him with Castillo for the team lead with 12, giving the Quakes a 2-0 advantage over Stockton starter and eventual winner Ben Hornbeck.

Hornbeck allowed (3-2) four runs, three earned, over five innings in the win.

Corbin (5-3) saw his three-game winning streak come to an end, allowing eight earned runs on seven hits over just 3 2/3 innings.

The Quakes (14-11, 53-42), who finish the six-game road trip at 3-3, remain in first place by a full game over both High Desert and Lake Elsinore, who both lost on Monday night. Ryan Chaffee (3-4) takes the mound for the Quakes on Tuesday night, as they return to The Epicenter for a three-game home stand against the Bakersfield Blaze. The Blaze will send righthander Carlos Pimentel (6-4) to the hill, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm from The Epicenter.

The upcoming home stand includes a GIVE Recycle Tuesday, an early-morning 10:35am game and a Buffalo Wild Wings Thirsty Thursday. Tickets can be purchased by calling (909) 481-5000 or anytime online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter on Saturday night...Go Quakes!
