Giants Complete Series Sweep Of The JetHawks

July 20, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release

San Jose scored a pair of runs off Lancaster's bullpen and held on for a 6-5 win over the JetHawks in the finale of a three-game series at Clear Channel Stadium Monday. The JetHawks grabbed an early lead when Lee Cruz hit an RBI single off Giants starter Justin Fitzgerald in the bottom of the first.

After the Giants evened the score in the third, JetHawks starter Kyle Greenwalt surrendered solo home runs to Drew Biery and James Simmons in the fourth, which gave San Jose a 4-1 advantage.

But Lancaster answered with three runs off Fitzgerald in the bottom of the frame. Mark Ori and Albert Cartwright hit RBI doubles and David Flores added an RBI single to take a 4-3 edge.

After San Jose answered with a run in the fifth, the Giants scored a run off Lancaster reliever Kyle Godfrey, who yielded a hit and three walks, one of which was intentional, in the sixth to reclaim the lead at 5-4.

JetHawks reliever Brian Wabick allowed a run in the seventh, but Brian Pellegrini laced an RBI double off Craig Whitaker in the bottom of the frame to reduce the deficit to 6-5. In a controversial play, Cruz was caught stealing by Whitaker, which helped San Jose escape the inning with the lead. JetHawks manager Tom Lawless argued that Whitaker should have been called for a balk, but the California League umpiring crew disagreed.

Fitzgerald (7-2) gave up seven hits and four earned runs in six innings pitched and earned the win. Godfrey (2-4) was charged with the loss. Jason Stoffel tossed a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his 16th save of the season.

With the win, the Giants improved to 10-15 in the second half and 55-40 overall. The JetHawks fell to 10-15 and 33-62 overall.

The JetHawks will hit the road for a six-game trip, which commences with a three-game series at Visalia Tuesday night. Lancaster will start southpaw Patrick Urckfitz (4-4, 3.29 ERA). The Rawhide are expected to counter with lefty Daniel Taylor (3-3, 6.84 ERA). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. Tune in for all the live action beginning with the JetHawks Pre-Game Show at 6:45 p.m. on www.jethawks.com/csn and News Talk 1380-AM.
