July 20, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release

Drew Biery and James Simmons homered and the San Jose Giants held off the Lancaster JetHawks to earn a 6-5 victory on Monday evening at Clear Channel Stadium. Giants reliever David Quinowski stranded the potential tying run at third base in the seventh and eighth innings before Jason Stoffel tossed a scoreless ninth to pick-up the save. San Jose earns a sweep of the three-game series and concludes their road trip with a 5-1 record.

Biery (2-for-5, 2B, HR, RBI), Simmons (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI), Ehire Adrianza (2-for-3, 2 SB), Jose Flores (2-for-5, RBI) and Wendell Fairley (2-for-4, RBI) all finished with two hits to lead the Giants offensively. San Jose out-hit Lancaster by a 13-11 margin.

Justin Fitzgerald (7-2) earned the win after tossing six innings with four runs (all earned) and seven hits allowed. The right-hander walked four and struck out three.

The Giants took the lead for good with a single run in the top of the sixth inning. With the score tied 4-4, Joel Weeks began the frame with a single before consecutive one-out walks to Francisco Peguero and Adrianza loaded the bases. Flores followed with a fielder's choice groundout to second base as Weeks scored the go-ahead run.

In the top of the seventh, Biery started the rally with a one-out bloop double down the right field line and scored on Simmons' two-out single into left.

Craig Whitaker (1/3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO) relieved Fitzgerald to begin the bottom of the seventh and promptly allowed a leadoff single to Albert Cartwright before Brian Pellegrini ripped an RBI double into the left field corner to bring Lancaster to within 6-5. Lee Cruz followed with a single into right advancing Pellegrini, the potential tying run, to third base. Then with Andy Simunic at the plate, Whitaker picked off Cruz at first base for the first out of the inning. Simunic followed by drawing a walk, but Quinowski entered the game and induced Federico Hernandez to pop out before Mark Ori struck out swinging on a full count pitch.

Quinowski (1 2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) quickly retired the first two batters of the bottom of the eighth before allowing a triple into the right field corner off the bat of Jay Austin. However, Cartwright followed by grounding out to third base ending the threat.

In the bottom of the ninth, Stoffel issued a leadoff walk to Pellegrini to again put the potential tying run on base. Stoffel though recovered to strikeout Cruz before pinch-runner Barry Butera was thrown out at second base attempting to steal. Simunic followed by grounding out to shortstop ending the game.

Stoffel (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) picked-up his second save of the series and 16th of the year.

Lancaster initially took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Cruz delivered a two-out, RBI single into right field against Fitzgerald. San Jose drew even in the top of the third as Adrianza walked with one out before Flores singled to put runners on first and second. Johnny Monell followed with a sharp line drive single into right field plating Adrianza with the tying run.

Biery gave the Giants their first lead with a solo homer in the top of the fourth inning. Two batters later, Simmons belted a solo homer to deep right center for a 3-1 advantage.

The JetHawks though immediately responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Hernandez led off by drawing a walk before scoring when the next hitter, Ori, smacked a double to the fence in left center. David Flores then came though with an RBI single to tie the game before Cartwright's two-out, RBI double gave Lancaster back the lead.

In the top of the fifth, Adrianza led off with a single, stole second and scored the tying run on Fairley's two-out single into center field.

Fitzgerald settled down after his fourth-inning struggles and held Lancaster off the scoreboard in the fifth and sixth frames to conclude his outing.

JetHawks reliever Kyle Godfrey (2-4) suffered the loss after surrendering the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning.
