Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA-- The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes snapped a three-game losing streak on Friday night, beating the Lake Elsinore Storm 4-3 at LoanMart field to salvage one game in the three-game series.
The win moves the Quakes into a first-place tie with the High Desert Mavericks atop the South Division, after the Mavs lost 2-1 to the Modesto Nuts.
Rancho came from behind to win, after Lake Elsinore took a 2-0 lead in the second inning against Quakes' starter Felipe Gonzalez. Franmil Reyes and Fernando Perez hit back-to back singles to lead off the inning, putting runners at the corners with nobody out. After Trae Santos struck out, Perez broke for second base, while Reyes simultaneously broke for home. Quakes catcher Julian Leon's throw went to second base, and Erick Mejia cut off the throw before it reached the base and fired home to get Reyes. But, Mejia's throw home was over Leon's head, and Reyes stole home to make it 1-0 Storm. It was Mejia's team-high 20th error of the season, and his second of the series. Later in the inning, Javier Guerra hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Perez to make it 2-0 Lake Elsinore.
Rancho took the lead for good after scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Yusniel Diaz led off the inning by hitting a routine ground ball to first base, but Storm first baseman Santos butchered it, allowing Diaz to reach on error. Then, Devan Ahart and Michael Ahmed walked, loading the bases for Pin-Chieh Chen. Chen blooped a single into right field, scoring Diaz and Ahart to tie the game at two. Erick Mejia then hit into a fielder's choice that scored Ahmed, and the Quakes took a 3-2 lead.
Rancho Cucamonga tacked on a big insurance run in the eighth inning, after Tim Locastro led off the frame with a triple, and Johan Mieses drove him in with a sacrifice fly. It proved to be the winning run after Lake Elsinore scored a run in the ninth inning off of Karch Kowalczyk, after Guerra hit an RBI single to score Perez.
The Quakes won despite being outhit nine to five, and going just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
Gonzalez (1-2) picks up the win after pitching five innings, and allowing just two runs (one earned), while striking out three. Chris Anderson and Luis De Paula combined for three scoreless innings in relief, while Kowalczyk earned his fifth save of the season despite giving up a run in the ninth. Throughout this series, the Quakes bullpen allowed just two earned runs in 10.1 innings pitched.
Brett Kennedy (1-3) takes the loss for the Storm. He pitched five innings and allowed just two hits, three runs (one earned) and struck out six. Rancho Cucamonga scored the winning run off of top-30 prospect Jose Torres, who allowed two hits and a run in the eighth inning.
The Quakes improve to 33-22 on the season, while Lake Elsinore drops to 27-28. Rancho Cucamonga's home stand continues on Saturday night, when the Quakes take on the LA Angels' affiliate, the Inland Empire 66ers in a four-game series. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
Saturday will be Woodmen Life Fireworks Night, as everyone will enjoy a post-game Fireworks display thanks to Woodmen Life! Tickets are available at (909) 481-5000 or rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at LoanMart Field very soon...Go Quakes!
