San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE, CA - The Giants scored three early runs while Mark Reyes took a shutout into the seventh in San Jose's 3-1 win over the Visalia Rawhide on Thursday evening at Municipal Stadium. The victory evened the series at a game apiece and moved the Giants (32-21) back to within one game of the Rawhide (33-20) for first place in the first half race.

Reyes (4-1) allowed just three hits and one run during his seven-inning masterpiece to pick-up the win. The left-hander, who didn't surrender a hit until the fifth, walked three and struck out two. Reyes Moronta (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) and Rodolfo Martinez (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) then threw scoreless eighth and ninth innings respectively out of the bullpen to seal the victory. Martinez earned his league-leading 16th save of the season.

Ronnie Jebavy (3-for-4, 2B) had three hits and Jose Vizcaino, Jr. (1-for-3, HR, RBI) blasted a solo home run to lead San Jose at the plate.

The Giants jumped out early against Visalia starter Cody Reed, who was making his California League debut, for a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Consecutive singles from Jebavy and Steven Duggar to start the frame put runners on the corners with none out. After C.J Hinojosa struck out, Chris Shaw delivered an RBI groundout to third plating Jebavy.

Vizcaino, Jr. extended the lead to 2-0 with a towering solo home run in the bottom of the second. The homer was Vizcaino's third of the season.

The Giants then scored in their third straight inning with a tally in the bottom of the third. Jebavy led off with a double into the left field corner before moving to third on Duggar's groundout. Hinojosa was up next and he laced a single into center to score Jebavy for a 3-0 advantage.

Meanwhile, the Rawhide's only baserunner over the first four innings against Reyes was a leadoff walk to Chuck Taylor in the top of the first. Taylor though was later thrown out at second attempting to steal. Reyes then worked 1-2-3 second, third and fourth innings. The San Jose starter faced the minimum 12 hitters in the opening four frames with just 47 total pitches thrown.

Visalia's first hit of the night came in the top of the fifth when Henry Castillo lined a one-out single into left. Castillo though was stranded at first with the next two batters popped out.

In the sixth, Reyes issued a one-out walk to Colin Bray, but quickly set down the next two hitters.

The Rawhide then rallied in the seventh loading the bases with none out against Reyes. Back-to-back singles from Marty Herum and Rudy Flores began the frame before a full-count walk to Castillo loaded the bases. Dawel Lugo was up next, but Reyes induced him to ground into a 6-4-3 double play for the first two outs of the inning. Herum scored on the double play to trim the Giants lead to 3-1, but Visalia would get no closer. Reyes then set down Stryker Trahan on a deep fly out to center to end his outing.

Moronta entered from the bullpen to begin the top of the eighth and promptly struck out the side in a dominant 1-2-3 inning. In the ninth, Martinez set down Domingo Leyba on groundout before Herum struck out swinging. Flores followed with a single to bring the potential tying run to the plate, but Castillo grounded out on the first pitch of his at-bat to end the contest.

Reed (0-1) suffered the loss for Visalia after yielding three runs (all earned) on five hits over four innings. The 19-year old left-hander walked one and struck out five.
