Modesto Nuts News Release

Adelanto, CA. - Sam Howard was great again for the Modesto Nuts in a 2-1 win over the High Desert Mavericks to avoid a sweep at Heritage Field on Friday night.

Sam Howard (W, 4-3) picked up right where he left off after a tremendous month of May in which he posted a 2.41 ERA for the Nuts (21-33). Howard worked a season-high-tying eight innings while allowing only one run on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Howard retired 12 in a row after allowing a one-out single in the first inning.

All the Nuts offense came on one play in the fourth inning against Adam Quintana (L, 1-3) and the Mavs (33-22). Wes Rogers opened the fourth inning with a walk. Shane Hoelscher followed with a RBI single to put runners at the corners. Max White smacked a RBI single into right. Hoelscher attempted to go first to third. Mavs' right fielder Jario Beras overthrew third base and allowed Hoelscher to score the run that ended up being the difference in the game.

Quintana worked six strong innings allowing just three hits and striking out seven.

Jerry Vasto (S, 8/10) turned in another shutdown ninth retiring the Mavs in order with one strikeout.
