Stockton Ports News Release

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. - The Stockton Ports came three outs away from ending a six-game losing skid with a single run on Sunday night. Instead, Stockton was handed its seventh straight loss in walk-off fashion. The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to earn a series sweep and keep the Ports winless on their road trip as the Quakes walked off with a 2-1 victory at Loan Mart Field.

Stockton opened the scoring in the top of the second. Seth Brown drew a one-out walk, advanced to third on a Mikey White single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Iolana Akau that gave the Ports a 1-0 lead.

The run in the second inning was the only run allowed by Quakes starter Josh Sborz, who did not factor into the decision after going four innings and allowing one run on two hits while walking one and striking out four.

Meanwhile, Ports starter Kyle Friedrichs was in the midst of a sensational outing. Friedrichs pitched around a hit batter in the first, a two-out single in the third, and a leadoff single in the fifth. After the leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth, Friedrichs went on to retire the final nine batters he faced. He would leave having qualified for the win but would be rendered a no-decision, going seven scoreless innings and allowing three hits while striking out nine without walking a batter.

Felipe Gonzalez took over for Rancho Cucamonga in the fifth inning and tossed for scoreless frames. Stockton had a chance to add to its 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth as they got a leadoff double from James Harris, who wound up at third base with one out. After the Quakes intentionally walked B.J. Boyd, Joe Bennie hit into an inning-ending double-play that preserved a one-run deficit for Rancho Cucamonga.

After Lou Trivino set the side down in order in the eighth, Carlos Navas (1-4) was summoned to close out the ballgame in the ninth. Navas gave up back-to-back singles to Tim Locastro and Matt Beaty to start the inning which put runners at the corners with nobody out. Ariel Sandoval came up to bat and tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right. Michael Ahmed followed with a single to center that put runners at the corners and the winning run at third base with one out. After Ahmed took second on defensive indifference, Johan Mieses was intentionally walked to load the bases for Joey Curletta, who won the game for the Quakes with a sac-fly to right to give Rancho Cucamonga a walk-off 2-1 vitory.

Navas suffered his fourth blown save and fourth loss of the season. Jeff Malm (2-0), who set the side down in order in the top of the ninth, picked up his second win of the series for the Quakes.

After an 0-7 road trip, the Ports return home to begin a four-game series with the Lake Elsinore Storm. Right-hander Matt Sergey (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will be added to the Stockton roster and make the start in the series opener for the Ports. First pitch at Banner Island Ballpark is set for 6:30 p.m. PDT.
