Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LAKE ELSINORE, Calif.- The JetHawks bullpen tossed six shutout innings, but the Lake Elsinore Storm held off a late Lancaster rally and hung on for a 3-2 victory on Sunday night at The Diamond.
Garrett Stubbs walked to lead off the ninth inning and Ramon Laureano followed with a single off All-Star closer Colby Blueberg. After a failed bunt attempt by Bryan Muniz, Jason Martin walked to load the bases. Jamie Ritchie struck out looking and Keach Ballard grounded to second to end the game. Blueberg tallied his 11th save in 12 attempts.
Gonzalo Sanudo and Scott Weathersby combined on six shutout frames out of the Lancaster bullpen, striking out seven while walking just one.
The JetHawks took a brief lead with a run in the top of the second inning against Storm starter Walker Lockett. Bryan Muniz led off with a walk and moved to third on a double by Jason Martin. Two batters later, Keach Ballard brought home Muniz with an RBI ground out to second. Ballard now has 11 RBIs in his first seven games with Lancaster.
Lockett (3-3) retired the final three batters of the second, which started a string of 15 straight set down by the right-hander.
He struck out six and allowed just one hit in six innings of work.
Lake Elsinore scored three times in the bottom of the second without the aid of a hit off Lancaster starter Dean Deetz (4-4).
The Storm drew two walks, Deetz hit two batters, and the JetHawks committed two errors. Deetz lasted just two innings.
He did not give up a hit, but was charged with three runs (two earned), walked three, and hit three batters. He also struck out three.
The JetHawks pulled within a run in the seventh. Jason Martin was given credit with an RBI triple after Edwin Moreno misjudged a fly ball in right field and had it drop well in front of him.
Lancaster missed several opportunities late in the game to tie or take the lead. With Martin on third and one out in the seventh, the next two batters went down in order. Two runners were picked off and caught stealing in the seventh and eighth, and the JetHawks left the bases loaded in the ninth.
The JetHawks and Storm conclude their four-game series on Sunday night at The Diamond. Dean Deetz (4-3) will start for Lancaster against Walter Lockett (2-3). First pitch is 6:30 p.m.
The JetHawks are celebrating their 20th anniversary season in Lancaster. Great ticket packages and group events are on sale now at jethawks.com or by calling (661) 726-5400.
