
Mavs Complete Sweep with Another Stunner

The Sixers got a run in the first against High Desert (49-32, 6-5) when Wade Wass doubled off the wall in center to score Tim Arakawa who had singled to open the game. Inland Empire got three more runs in the sixth when Wass struck again. The Pensacola, FL native hammered an opposite field homer to make it 2-0. It was Wass ' eighth homer of the year. Roberto Baldoquin later singled in the sixth and then came home when Zach Houchins homered to left to make it 4-0 Inland Empire (28-53, 5-6). It was Houchins ' team best ninth of the year and his fifth at High Desert's Heritage Field. Jake Jewell tossed six scoreless innings allowing six hits, three walks and three K's in a no- decsion for IE.
Trouble started in the seventh when Jose Cardona homered off Inland Empire reliever Winston Lavendier to make it 4-1. The homer was Cardona's fifth of the year. The wagon went off the trail entirely for Inland Empire in the eighth as High Desert scored four runs on three hits and a walk against Sixer southpaw Kevin Grendell (0-3) without an out recorded. Grendell was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. The Mavs padded the lead with three more runs to make it a seven r un frame and an 8-4 lead. Cody Palmquist tossed a scoreless ninth for the Mavs. Shane McCain (2-1) with 2.1 innings of scoreless work in relief of starter Cole Wiper.
