Inland Empire 66ers News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The 66ers dropped a pitchers' duel 2-1 at LoanMart Field on Monday night and fell to 0-5 on the season in the process. The defending Cal League Champ Rancho Cucamonga Quakes pushed across the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning in the first meeting between the two clubs in 2016.

Both starters were in unfamiliar positions. Josh Sborz of the Quakes and Tyler Carpenter for IE were each making their first professional starts after tallying nothing but relief appearances in their brief careers; each man did quite well. The Quakes righty went 5.2 IP allowing no runs and just two hits with three K's. Carpenter was strong for the Sixers going five shutout frames and surrendering four hits and walking two with 5 K's.

The Quakes (2-3) broke the logjam in the sixth when Matt Beaty and Kyle Garlick hit consecutive one-out doubles off IE reliever Keynan Middleton. The Sixers pushed a run across in the top of the eighth to tie it 1-1 when David Fletcher doubled to open the frame. He stole third, his second steal of the night, and came in on an RBI groundout. Quakes reliever Karch Kowalczyk limited the damage to one run.

Andrew Toles tripled for Rancho to open the ninth against IE righty Eduardo Paredes (0-1) and then scored on Tim Locastro's sac fly to make it 2-1. Kowalczyk slammed the door in the top of the ninth to improve to 1-1 on the year. Jeff Boehm had the lone multi-hit game for the 66ers with a double and a single. The series continues on Tuesday at 7:05 pm and can be heard live at 66ers.com.
