San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - The Visalia Rawhide scored a pair of two-out runs in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead for good before holding off a Giants ninth-inning rally to earn a 6-5 series-opening victory over San Jose on Monday night at Municipal Stadium.
Steven Duggar (2-for-3, HR, RBI, SB) and Jonah Arenado (2-for-4, HR, RBI) each homered as part of two-hit games to lead the Giants offensively in defeat. San Jose scored once in the bottom of the ninth to pull within 6-5 and had the bases loaded with two outs before falling short. The loss was the Giants' (1-1) first of the season.
The back-and-forth affair saw San Jose take a 3-1 lead with a three-run bottom of the fourth. Duggar led off the frame with a home run to deep left center field to tie the contest. Later in the inning with two runners on base and none out, Aramis Garcia laced an RBI double into the left field corner to put the Giants in front. Jose Vizcaino, Jr. then produced an RBI single into center extending the San Jose advantage to 3-1.
D.J. Snelten delivered a solid five-inning start for the Giants surrendering just one unearned run and four hits. The left-hander walked one and struck out five during his 71-pitch outing.
Pat Young (1 1/3 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO) worked a scoreless top of the sixth out of the San Jose bullpen to maintain the 3-1 lead before running into trouble in the seventh. A single from Dawal Lugo started the seventh before Tyler Baker drew a walk. Young then induced Ericson Leonora to fly out to deep center, but Victor Reyes followed by greeting new pitcher Carlos Diaz (2/3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) with an RBI single into right center. Domingo Leyba then blooped a single down the right field line to bring home Baker with the tying run before Colin Bray came through with the third straight RBI single of the inning as his hit scored the go-ahead run for a 4-3 Rawhide lead.
The Giants immediately tied the score in the bottom of the seventh when Arenado led off with a towering solo home run to left. The home run was Arenado's first of the season.
Jeff Soptic entered from the bullpen to begin the top of the eighth, but allowed a one-out triple to deep left center off the bay of Cody Regis. Soptic retired the next hitter, Lugo, on a groundout to shortstop, but with Baker at the plate, a wild pitch allowed Regis to score putting Visalia in front by a 5-4 margin. The rally continued as Baker walked and Leonora singled before a Reyes RBI single pushed the lead to 6-4 and ended Soptic's night.
San Jose rallied in the bottom of the ninth against Rawhide closer Zac Curtis before ultimately falling short. Brandon Bednar lined a single to center to leadoff before Duggar's one-out infield single put runners on first and second. Hinojosa then bounced a single off the glove of the shortstop Leyba and into shallow left. The hit plated Bednar to cut the deficit to 6-5 as Duggar advanced to second. After Chris Shaw popped out, Garcia drew a walk to load the bases. However with the potential tying and winning runs in scoring position, Curtis got Vizcaino, Jr. to strikeout swinging on a 3-2 pitch ending the game.
Bud Jeter (2-0) was credited with the win out of the Visalia bullpen despite allowing Arenado's tying home run in the seventh. Jeter pitched two innings and allowed one run. Curtis picked-up his second save of the season.
Soptic (0-1) was charged with the loss for the Giants. The right-hander surrendered two runs (both earned) on three hits in 2/3 of an inning.
