Modesto Nuts News Release

Bakersfield, CA. - The Modesto Nuts let a late lead slip in an 8-7, eleven-inning loss to the Bakersfield Blaze on Monday night at John Thurman Field.

Gianfranco Wawoe laid down a suicide squeeze with one out in the eleventh to bring in the walk-off run for the Blaze (1-3) which capped the six-run rally.

The Nuts (1-3) added four insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings to build a five run advantage.

Command issues and shaky defense cost the Nuts late. After three straight walks to start the eighth, the Blaze plated a run on a fielder's choice before Drew Jackson whacked a two-run double. Austin Cousino then scored on a throwing error by Emerson Jimenez. In the ninth, with two outs, Wawoe hit a groundball to third baseman Shane Hoelscher. With a chance to clinch the win for the Nuts, Hoelscher made an errant throw to first that allowed Wawoe to reach before he scored the tying run on Arby Fields RBI single.

Kyle Scheppel (W, 1-0) tossed a perfect eleventh inning with one strikeout for the Blaze.

Colin Welmon (L, 0-1) worked 1.2 allowing the winning run to score in the eleventh.

Ryan Castellani made his first start for the Nuts and struck out a career-high nine batters over five-plus innings.

Game two of the three-game series in Bakersfield is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday night. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:10 p.m.
