Stockton Ports News Release

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. - The Stockton Ports saw an early lead evaporate quickly on Saturday night at Loan Mart Field. Stockton took a 3-1 lead after two innings, but saw the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes score seven of the game's final eight runs as Stockton dropped its sixth straight contest by a final of 8-4.

Each team took advantage of outfield errors to plate a run in the first inning. James Harris singled to right in the top of the first and went to third as the ball got by right fielder Ariel Sandoval. Harris scored on an ensuing groundout by Richie Martin to give the Ports a 1-0 lead. The Quakes scored their run in similar fashion in the bottom of the first as Eric Mejia led off with a single to left and the ball got by Harris, allowing Mejia to get to third. He as well scored on an RBI groudout to shortstop by Tim Locastro to tie the game at 1-1.

Stockton took a brief lead in the second as with two on and one out, Melvin Mercedes delivered a two-run single to center to give the Ports a 3-1 lead. The Ports loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third with a chance to stretch their lead, but Quakes starter Grant Holmes (7-3) would induce an inning-ending 5-4-3 double-play to preserve the two-run deficit.

Rancho Cucamonga stormed ahead in the third as Ports starter Heath Fillmyer (4-6) fell victim to three straight two-out doubles. With one on and two out, Sandoval, Matt Beaty and Johan Mieses all doubled to drive in three runs and put the Quakes up 4-3.

Fillmyer had a similar fate befall him in the fourth. With two on and two out, Edwin Rios drove in two runs with a double to right and Beaty followed with a double to left that knocked Fillmyer from the contest. Corey Miller took over and would see his two inherited runners score on a passed ball and a wild pitch, with both runs charged to Fillmyer's ledger.

Fillmyer suffered his second straight loss, going 3.1 innings and allowing eight runs (six earned) on eight hits while walking three and striking out three.

Meanwhile, Holmes would retire seven of the eight batters he faced to close out his outing while recording his final six outs via the strikeout. Holmes picked up the win, going five innings and allowing three runs on six hits while walking four and striking out seven.

The Ports plated a run in the seventh inning, but it ended up being their lone run versus the Quakes bullpen. Wes Helsabeck set the side down in order in the sixth. In the seventh with two outs and the bases empty, B.J. Boyd doubled and scored two batters later on an RBI single by Sandber Pimentel to cut the deficit to 8-4. It was the only run allowed by Helsabeck in his two innings pitched in his California League debut.

Kyle Hooper pitched around a walk and a single allowed in the eighth and Adam Bray set the side down in order in the ninth to close out the game for the Quakes.

Miller and Koby Gauna combined for 4.2 innings of scoreless relief for Stockton down the stretch.
