Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA-- The Rancho Cucamonga offense broke out in a big way on Saturday evening, beating the Stockton Ports by a final score of 8-4 in front of a sold-out crowd at LoanMart Field.
Matt Beaty had three hits and Edwin Rios extended his hitting streak to 12 straight games, as the Quakes finished with a total of 11 base hits in winning their third straight.
Quakes' starter Grant Holmes struggled early, as Stockton got out to an early 3-1 lead after just two innings. In the third, the Port threatened to break it open, but Rios turned in an incredible double-play from third base, robbing Ports' catcher Argenis Raga with a diving stop, then starting a 5-4-3 twin-killing to keep the deficit at two runs.
The offense caught fire in the bottom of the inning, as Beaty, newcomer Ariel Sandoval and Johan Mieses all had consecutive two-out run-scoring doubles against Stockton starter Heath Fillmyer, giving the Quakes a 4-3 advantage.
Rancho tallied four more in the fourth, breaking the game open. Rios doubled home a pair, chasing Fillmyer (4-6) from the game, then scored on a wild pitch by reliever Corey Miller, making it 7-3. Miller would unload a second wild pitch, scoring Beaty from third, capping the inning with the Quakes up 8-3.
Holmes (7-3) would settle in after the tough start, as he got stronger and finished the night with five innings of work, surrendering three runs (two earned) on six hits. The right-hander struck out six of the final seven men he faced and finished with seven total punch-outs.
Wes Helsabeck debuted in the sixth and worked a 1-2-3 inning. The left-hander went on to work two total frames in his Quakes' debut, allowing a run on three hits. Kyle Hooper tossed a scoreless eighth, before Adam Bray closed it out with a perfect ninth.
The Quakes (6-4, 48-32) have now won three in a row and look to sweep the four-game series over the Ports on Sunday night at 7:05pm. Josh Sborz (7-3) will take on Stockton's Kyle Friedrichs (3-1).
