San Jose Giants News Release
VISALIA, CA - The San Jose Giants earned their second straight win in Visalia with a 7-5 victory over the Rawhide on Saturday evening at Recreation Park. In a back-and-forth affair, the Giants (43-36) took the lead for good with a two-run top of the sixth and have now won two out of the first three games in the series.
Ronnie Jebavy (3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) had three hits and drove in two runs to lead the way offensively. Jonah Arenado (2-for-5, 2 2B, RBI), T.J. Bennett (2-for-5) and Richard Rodriguez (2-for-3) added two hits apiece while Dylan Davis (1-for-3, 2 RBI) drove in a pair of runs. San Francisco Giants infielder Kelby Tomlinson (2-for-4, RBI) also singled twice and collected one RBI in the first game of his rehabilitation assignment with San Jose. Visalia twice erased two-run Giants leads to tie the game, but never led themselves in the contest.
Jordan Johnson (6-6) picked-up the win after tossing the first six innings with five runs (four earned) allowed. Johnson surrendered eight hits, walked none and struck out six during his outing. Tyler Cyr (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) and Reyes Moronta (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) then combined for three scoreless innings of relief to seal the victory. Moronta earned his second save of the season.
San Jose jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with single tallies in the first and second innings against Rawhide starter Brad Keller. Jebavy began the game with a double into the left field corner before moving to third on Tomlinson's groundout to second. Davis then lofted a sacrifice fly to deep right center plating Jebavy with the first run of the night.
In the top of the second, Jose Vizcaino, Jr. reached on an error to start the inning. Back-to-back groundouts from Ty Ross and Bennett advanced Vizcaino to third before Keller uncorked a wild pitch to score the run.
Visalia though answered with runs in the bottom of the second and third innings against Johnson to tie the game. Johnson retired the first four Rawhide hitters of the evening before Henry Castillo doubled with one out in the bottom of the second. A Dawel Lugo single then moved Castillo to third before Stryker Trahan's groundout scored the run.
In the third, Colin Bray led off with a triple into the right field corner and scored the tying run two batters later when Domingo Leyba grounded a one-out single into right.
The Giants though came back with a two-run top of the fourth to reclaim the lead. Consecutive one-out singles from Bennett and Rodriguez started the rally. A Robbie Garvey groundout advanced the runners to second and third before Jebavy reached on a ground ball infield single up the middle to score Bennett with the go-ahead run. Tomlinson was up next and he lined a single into left center plating Rodriguez to make it 4-2.
Johnson breezed through a scoreless bottom of the fourth before running into trouble in the fifth. With San Jose still ahead by two runs, the inning began with Bray grounding a ball to second that was misplayed by Bennett for an error. Robelys Reyes then singled up the middle before Leyba smashed an RBI double down the right field line to trim the Giants lead to 4-3. Then with Marty Herum at the plate, a Johnson wild pitch brought home Reyes to tie the game 4-4. The wild pitch also advanced Leyba, the potential go-ahead run, to third, but the Rawhide were unable to bring him home. Johnson struck out Herum, induced Michael Perez to groundout back to the mound and retired Castillo on a groundout to second to end the inning.
With the game tied, San Jose rallied in the top of the sixth against Keller. Bennett blooped a leadoff single into shallow left. A Rodriguez sacrifice bunt then moved Bennett to second. Garvey followed with a sharp grounder back to Keller, who threw to third in an attempt to retire Bennett. The throw, however, was late as Bennett slid safely with Garvey reaching first on a fielder's choice. Jebaby then bunted up the first base line that saw Bennett narrowly beat the throw home from the first baseman Herum. Jebavy was credited with a single and an RBI on the play as the Giants took a 5-4 lead. After Tomlinson grounded into a force out, Davis delivered a two-out RBI single up the middle pushing the San Jose advantage to 6-4.
The Rawhide immediately got one run back in the bottom of the sixth when Lugo led off with a towering solo home run to left. The homer, Lugo's 12th of the season, cut the Giants lead to 6-5. Johnson though recovered to set down the next three hitters and Visalia would not catch San Jose in the late innings.
Cyr entered from the bullpen to begin the bottom of the seventh and worked around a one-out walk to keep the Giants ahead by a run. San Jose then padded their lead in the top of the eighth as Davis walked with two outs and came home when Arenado blasted a double into the right field corner. The RBI hit made the score 7-5.
In the bottom of the eighth, Cyr surrendered a two-out single to Trahan, but retired Chuck Taylor on a line out to third to end the inning. Then in the ninth, Moronta cruised through a 1-2-3 frame to record the save. Moronta struck out Bray to start the inning before consecutive groundouts of Reyes and Leyba ended the game.
Keller (6-5) was saddled with the loss after yielding six runs (five earned) on 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out one and walked none.
