Modesto Nuts News Release

Modesto, CA. - After 12 consecutive scoreless frames, the Bakersfield Blaze broke through to send the Modesto Nuts to a 5-3, 15-inning loss at John Thurman Field on Saturday night.

Tyler Matzek (L, 0-2) took the mound in the 15th for the Nuts (4-6; 30-50) with the game tied. Aaron Barbosa led the inning off for the Blaze (8-2; 45-35) and roped a single to left that Max White misplayed allowing Barbosa to reach third. Jordan Cowan followed and drove in the game-winning run with a RBI single. Arby Fields and Braden Bishop both walked to load the bases before Gianfranco Wawoe added to the lead with a RBI single of his own plating two runs before an out was recorded. With the bases loaded and no one out, Matzek stopped the bleeding there by striking out back-to-back hitters and tagging out Arby Fields at the plate who tried to score on an errant fastball.

Drew Weeks led the bottom of the 15th off with a triple but he was stranded there as Aaron Brooks (S, 3/6) finished the frame to give the Blaze the win and a chance for a four-game series sweep on Sunday night.

The Nuts had tied the game in the sixth. Omar Carrizales beat out an RBI infield single with the bases loaded. Carrizales went 3-for-8. Forrest Wall tied the game on a RBI groundout.

Jack Wynkoop made the start for Modesto and things got off on a rocky step. He surrendered all three runs and all six hits on his ledger in the first two innings. He finished his outing by striking out nine of the final eleven batters he faced before being lifted with two outs and the bases clear in the sixth. He did not walk a batter in 5.2 innings.

Darin Gillies (W, 1-0) worked around two walks in the 13th and 14th innings out of the Blaze' bullpen.

The finale of the four-game set with the Blaze on Sunday night is scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:00 p.m. Listen live online.
