Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
San Jose, CA-- Rancho Cucamonga's first-half chances took a major hit on Friday night, as the Quakes dropped a 2-1 decision in 11 innings to the San Jose Giants at Municipal Stadium.
Ronnie Jebavy's RBI single in the bottom of the 11th brought home the game-winner, as thanks to High Desert's victory over Stockton on Friday, the Quakes are now two games out with just two games to go.
Friday's game was an exciting one, as former Quake Rob Garvey scored the game's only run through the first eight innings, as he plated an unearned run to break a scoreless tie in the sixth.
Rancho was down to their final out in the ninth, when Edwin Rios connected off of Giants' closer Rodolfo Martinez for a two-out solo homer, his first as a Quake, tying the game at 1-1.
The Quakes had an opportunity to take the lead in the tenth against eventual winner Pat Young (4-1), as they loaded the bases with two outs, but Matt Beaty grounded out to end the threat.
In the last of the 11th, Tommy Bergjans (2-7) was victimized by an unearned run, as the Giants scored the walk-off win. T.J. Bennett singled to open the inning, bringing up Ty Ross, who tried to put down a sacrifice bunt. First baseman Julian Leon fielded the bunt and had time to get the out at second, but his throw pulled shortstop Erick Mejia off the second-base bag for the error. With runners at first and second, Garvey laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving runners to second and third. After the Quakes brought in center fielder Tim Locastro to use as a fifth infielder, Jebavy followed with a single to left, plating Bennett with the game-winner.
Rancho was held to just seven hits through their 11 innings.
Quakes' starter Hyun-Jin Ryu enjoyed his best outing, as he made his fourth start with Rancho on his current rehab assignment. Ryu allowed three hits over four scoreless innings, striking out five while walking one.
Yasiel Puig played in his fourth game on his current rehab assignment, finishing 1-for-3 at the plate.
The Quakes (41-27) must now win both remaining games in the first half, while High Desert must drop each of their remaining games in order to force a tie-breaking game next Thursday at LoanMart Field. Rancho will send All-Star Josh Sborz (6-3) to the mound on Saturday evening, as he'll be opposed by Jordan Johnson (5-4). Game time on Saturday will be 5:00pm from San Jose.
The Quakes return to second-half action at LoanMart Field on Thursday, June 23rd, as they host the High Desert Mavericks in a four-game series. Thursday will be another Thirsty Thursday, presented by Bernard's, as fans can enjoy $2 Pepsi products, $3 16-oz domestic drafts and $4 16-oz premium drafts, wine, champagne and margaritas. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
