San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - Ronnie Jebavy's single into the left field corner scored T.J. Bennett from third with the winning run to lift the San Jose Giants to a 2-1, 11-inning victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Friday night. In front of a sellout crowd of 4,247 at Municipal Stadium, San Jose (38-29) evened their series with Rancho Cucamonga at a game apiece and earned their second walk-off win of the season.
Jebavy (1-for-4, 2 RBI), who also drove home the Giants' only other run in the contest with a sacrifice fly, extended his hitting streak to 11 games with his 11th-inning single. Jonah Arenado (2-for-4, 2 2B) and Robbie Garvey (2-for-3, 2B) added two hits apiece for San Jose offensively.
Pat Young (4-1) was credited with the win after tossing scoreless 10th and 11th innings out of the Giants bullpen. Young pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the 10th to keep the game tied before cruising through a 1-2-3 11th inning.
With the score tied 1-1, the bottom of the 11th began when Bennett lined a single into right. Ty Ross was up next and he dropped down a bunt. Quakes first baseman Julian Leon fielded the ball along the line, but his throw to second, in an attempt to force out Bennett, was wide and pulled shortstop Erick Mejia off the base. Leon was charged with an error as San Jose put runners on first and second with none out. Garvey followed with a sacrifice bunt as Bennett, the potential winning run, moved to third. Rancho Cucamonga then brought in center fielder Tim Locastro to play on the left side of the infield, but Jebavy ripped an 0-2 pitch from reliever Tommy Bergjans over the head of third baseman Edwin Rios and into the left field corner. Jebavy was officially credited with a single as Bennett scored easily with the game-winning run.
Bergjans (2-7), who entered the game in the bottom of the sixth, was saddled with the loss. The right-hander was charged with two runs (none earned) over 5 1/3 innings. He allowed four hits, walked none and struck out six.
Friday's game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. Giants starter Jose Reyes pitched the first five innings in a spot start and yielded no runs and three hits. Reyes walked none and struck out two during his 65-pitch outing. The right-hander retired 14 out of the 18 batters he faced.
Rehabbing Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu worked four scoreless innings to open the game for the Quakes. Ryu worked around three doubles, walked one and struck out five.
San Jose finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth with Bergjans on the mound. Garvey led off with a grounder into the hole on the right side. Locastro, who was initially playing second base in the game, fielded the ball, but his late throw to first sailed wide and skipped into foul territory. As the ball rolled back around home plate, Garvey sprinted around second and made it safely into third. Garvey was credited with a single on the play before the two-base error. Jebavy was up next and he lifted a sacrifice fly to left plating Garvey for a 1-0 Giants lead.
The score then remained 1-0 until the top of the ninth. Jose Morel (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) needed just nine pitches to work a 1-2-3 top of the seventh. In the eighth, Reyes Moronta (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) surrendered a two-out single to Locastro, but came back to retire Joey Curletta on a pop out to retire the side.
All-star closer Rodolfo Martinez (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) then entered from the bullpen to begin the top of the ninth with San Jose still ahead by a run. Martinez quickly set down the first two batters on consecutive groundouts, but Rios then launched a 2-1 pitch over the fence down the left field line for a game-tying home run. The homer, Rios' first since joining the Quakes, evened the score at 1-1.
Meanwhile, Bergjans had kept the Giants off the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth innings before breezing through a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth sending the game into extras.
In the top of the 10th, Young issued a two-out walk to Mejia before uncorking a wild pitch. Locastro followed with an infield single to third and then Curletta walked to load the bases. Young though escaped with the game still tied as he induced Matt Beaty to groundout to second to end the inning.
Bergjans returned to the mound in the bottom of the 10th and threw just eight pitches in a perfect inning of work. Young then fanned two in a 1-2-3 top of the 11th before San Jose's game-winning rally in the bottom of the frame.
