Ninth-Inning Comeback Falls One Run Shy

Modesto, CA. - A couple of ninth-inning long balls made it interesting but the Modesto Nuts fell 8-7 against the Inland Empire 66ers on Friday night at John Thurman Field.

After the 66ers (22-46) added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth, the Nuts (25-43) faced a five-run deficit entering the bottom of the ninth.

Omar Carrizales started the frame with his first home run of the year. Wes Rogers followed with a triple, his second hit of the night, and scored on Drew Weeks' sac fly. Weeks drove in three runs.

With two outs, Max White legged out a double. Troy Stein followed and smashed a two-run shot to make it a one-run game. Josh Fuentes and Forrest Wall recorded back-to-back singles to put the tying and winning runs on but Luis Jean struck out to end the night.

Yency Almonte (L, 4-5) started and struck out a season-high ten but allowed six runs in six innings of work. The game was tied at three until Wade Wass smashed a three-run homer in the fifth. Almonte walked three and allowed five hits.

Justin Anderson (W, 3-7) worked 5.2 innings allowing just two earned runs with three strikeouts and one walk.
