Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (28-49, 1-7) gave everything they had to pick up their first victory in the second half. John Purdom's 11th inning bases loaded single untied the 1-1 game and gave Carolina the win.

Tennessee (41-34, 5-3) got to that point by scoring their only run in the seventh inning to tie the game. After a pair of one out singles, left fielder Jorge Cortes' walk loaded the bases for Joe Simokaitis. The shortstop hit a dribbler to Mudcats third baseman Lee Mitchell who couldn't make the play at home.

The game would remain tied until the bottom of the eleventh. Johnny Raburn started the inning off with a double and would eventually be the game winning run. Mitchell drew a walk to load the bases for Purdom. Purdom hit a blooper to shallow right field to end the ballgame.

Mudcats reliever Jimmy Serrano gave his ballclub five innings of shutout baseball. Serrano, making his 12th appearance for Carolina, made his first start a successful one. Despite picking up a no-decision the former New Mexico Lobo left the game with a 1-0 lead.

Carolina scored its first run in the fourth inning when Lambin's sacrifice fly scored Raburn. Raburn ended the night with three hits, two stolen bases, and two runs.

Mudcats reliever Chris Mobley adds to his perfect record with his third win on the year. James Henderson earned the loss in relief for the Smokies, falling to 3-2.

A pair of right handers will face off Tuesday night under the lights. James Russ (0-2, 3.40) will make his ninth start of the season as he goes against Mark Holliman (7-5, 2.49). First pitch is set for 7:15.
