Stars Offensive Woes Return

James Avery tossed eight scoreless innings and Jay Bruce homered twice and finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle in Chattanooga's 10-0 blanking of Huntsville Monday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The Lookouts improved to 6-2 in the second half of the season and 35-423 overall, while the Stars fell to 3-5 in the second half and 40-36 overall in suffering their worst defeat of the season. The Stars were held to three runs or less for a 12th time in the last 14 games and held to six hits or fewer for an 11th time in the last 16 contests.

Adam Rosales tripled in two runs with two outs in the first inning and scored on a base hit to right field by Luis Bolivar to make it 3-0 Lookouts six batters into the game. Bruce crushed a three-run home run to center field and a run-scoring fielder's choice grounder by Ryan Hanigan plated a fourth run in the second inning to extend the visitors lead to 7-0. Stars' starter Will Inman was taken out after two frames, allowing eight hits, walking two and fanning four to fall to 0-3. The young right-hander allowed 15 earned runs in 78 2/3 innings in 13 starts at high-class A Brevard County and has yielded 16 runs in 10 2/3 innings in three starts at the double-A level.

Hanigan clubbed a home run in the seventh and Bruce's lead off long ball the opposite way to left-center field leading off in the eighth closed the scoring. Bruce also doubled and scored in the third and singled in just his fourth game at the double-A level. Drew Anderson, Paul Janish, Bruce and Enrique Cruz all scored twice for the visitors, who banged out 16 hits, the most allowed in a game by the Stars this season.

Avery allowed only a single to Steve Sollmann and a single and double to Adam Heether, who was the only Stars' base runner to advance as far as third base. The right-hander fanned four, did not walk a batter and improved to 7-7.

The series continues Tuesday night, as Huntsville will send right-hander Corey Thurman to the hill against Lookouts' right-hander Johnny Cueto, making his first double-A start.
