Mississippi Braves News Release

The Mississippi Braves and the Montgomery Biscuits played game two of a six-game series at Trustmark Park Monday night in front of 5,620 fans. One night after getting only three hits and being shutout 7-0, Mississippi pounded out 17 hits and 13 runs on their way to a 13-6 win over Montgomery. The Biscuits took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first only to see the Braves hit three homers and score seven runs in the bottom of the inning. Braves' starter James Parr gave up three runs in the first, but then settled down to shutout Montgomery over the next five innings. He won his second AA game and his second consecutive game for the M-Braves.

Montgomery got the scoring started in the top of the first when their first three batters reached base and crossed the plate. Shaun Cumberland deposited the second pitch of the game into the right field corner for a double and he came in to score on a single by Josh Asanovich. Reid Brignac then belted his eighth homer of the year, a two-run shot, over the right-center field wall to give Montgomery a 3-0 lead after only a half-inning.

The Braves were not affected by the Biscuits offensive output in the opening frame. J.C. Holt led off the M-Braves half of the first with a walk and Diory Hernandez hit the first pitch he saw into the Braves' bullpen in left field cutting the lead to 3-2. Matt Esquivel drew a base on balls and moved to third when Mark Jurich executed a perfect hit-and-run by shooting a single through the right side of the infield. Josh Burrus doubled to left plating Esquivel and moving Jurich to third. Clint Sammons then ripped the first pitch he saw out to left for a three-run homer that gave the M-Braves a 6-3 lead. To change things up a little, Van Pope took a pitch, then he blasted the Braves third homer of the inning, a team record, over the left field wall to give Mississippi a 7-3 lead.

Mississippi wasn't one-and-done on this night. Brandon Jones drew a walk to get things started in the second inning, then second to get into scoring position. Mark Jurich's single to left score Jones giving the M-Braves an 8-3 lead.

The M-Braves tacked on two more runs in the fourth after Hernandez singled to get things started. He moved to second on a wild pitch and scored when Jones doubled to right. Jones came in to score the Braves 10th run one batter later when Jurich singled him in again. After four, Mississippi led 10-3.

Montgomery got two runs off of reliever Joe Winkelsas in the seventh when Chris Nowak singled and came around to score on a double by Erold Andrus. Andrus then scored from second on a chopper up the first base line that was finally played by Sammons.

Mississippi got those two runs back in the bottom of the inning when Greg Creek doubled and scored on a double off the center field wall by Pope. Sammons, who had earlier walked, came in to score on a single by Diory Hernandez to give the M-Braves a 12-5 lead.

Montgomery got a run in the eighth when Reid Brignac walked and scored on a single by Gaby Martinez.

The M-Braves added another run in the eighth when Josh Burrus singled in Brandon Jones to push the lead to 13-6.

James Parr gave up three runs in the top of the first, but then settled down to throw five consecutive scoreless innings. Parr won his second AA game and his second consecutive game. He improved to 2-0 on the year. Joe Winkelsas gave up two runs on three hits in one inning. Michael Nix gave up a run in an inning of work. Zach Schreiber threw a scoreless ninth.

Derek Feldkamp didn't make it past the first inning as he gave up seven runs on five hits in only an inning of work. He fell to 2-6 on the year. Jeremy Flanagan gave up three runs on four hits through three innings of work. Brett Wayne threw two scoreless innings while Nick DeBarr gave up two runs on three hits in an inning of work.
