Trenton Thunder News Release
Binghamton, NY - Cesar Puello continued his domination of Trenton pitching, clubbing two more home runs including the go-ahead shot in the eighth inning to propel the Binghamton Mets past the Thunder, 5-4, Thursday morning at NYSEG Stadium. With the victory, the first-place Mets win the series two-games-to-one and move 3.0 games ahead of Trenton in the standings. Puello's second long ball of the game came against Fred Lewis (0-2) leading off the eighth inning. He had earlier tied the score with a solo shot in the sixth against starter Matt Tracy. Puello homered four times in the series, and has now gone deep seven times against the Thunder in six games this season.
Binghamton erased an early 3-0 deficit and took the lead with two runs in the second and two in the sixth against Tracy. Alonzo Harris' two-out RBI double in the sixth chased Tracy and put the Mets in front, 4-3.
Trenton rallied for the game-tying run against Binghamton reliever Jack Leathersich in the eighth. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with none out, but Neil Medchill struck out. After the Mets brought in closer Jeff Walters (3-2), Jose Pirela lifted a sacrifice fly to left that evened the score at 4.
The Thunder scored three two-out runs in the first two innings against Mets starter Cory Mazzoni. Tyson Blaser (in his first-ever EL at-bat), Ali Castillo and Ramon Flores all recorded RBI hits as Trenton built the early lead.
Mazzoni would settle in thereafter and last 6.2 innings, striking out 11 batters and allowed five hits. Puello went 7-for-12 in the series with four home runs, two doubles and eight RBI.
The Thunder return to ARM & HAMMER Park for a six-game homestand in which they welcome Richmond for three games and then Binghamton for three. The Richmond series begins Friday at 7:05 pm, with right-hander Jose Ramirez (1-3, 2.65) expected to start for the Thunder against righty Taylor Rogers (4-2, 5.34).
