Offense Springs to Life in 10-6 Win at Binghamton

(Binghamton, NY) - Trenton built an 8-0 lead after five times at bat and held off a Binghamton rally to snap a three-game losing skid as the Thunder topped the Mets, 10-6, Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. Mikey O'Brien (4-0) remained undefeated in six starts as Trenton evened the three-game series at one win apiece.
The Thunder struck early and often against Binghamton starter Mark Cohoon (3-3), scoring three runs in each the first and second innings. Kyle Roller's two-run single in the first highlighted the opening-inning rally, while Slade Heathcott's two-run triple in the second made the score 5-0.
Tyler Austin grounded an RBI single following Heathcott's hit, part of a 3-for-4 night for the right fielder. Reegie Corona's RBI double in the fifth capped another two-run rally against Cohoon and put Trenton ahead 8-0 heading into the home half of the inning.
The Mets would send nine batters to the plate against O'Brien in the fifth, scoring all six of their runs for the contest in that one inning. Cesar Puello (10) and Allan Dykstra (7) hit back-to-back homers to cap the rally, with Puello's coming as a three-run shot. It was his fifth long ball against Trenton in five games against the Thunder.
Kevin Mahoney and Ali Castillo delivered big two-out RBI hits in the top of the seventh to provide key insurance runs for the Thunder and make the score 10-6. Francisco Rondon, Graham Stoneburner and Tommy Kahnle combined for four scoreless innings in relief of O'Brien to finish the victory.
Ramon Flores, Heathcott, Roller and Austin all had multi-hit games for Trenton, which collected 12 hits on the night. O'Brien lasted five innings and was charged with six runs on seven hits. The team is now 6-0 in games he has started this season.
The rubber game of the three-game series is scheduled for Thursday morning beginning at 10:35 am. Left-hander Matt Tracy (4-3, 5.09) is expected to start for the Thunder while the Mets counter with righty Cory Mazzoni. Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 10:20 am.
