RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels, in conjunction with the Eastern League, are pleased to announce that INF Mark Minicozzi has been named the Eastern League Player of the Month for the month of May. The 30-year old was the clear choice for the honor, pacing the circuit during the month in batting average (.427), runs scored (26), hits (44), on-base percentage (.508) and OPS (1.169). He was also named Eastern League Player of the Week during the month, claiming that honor for the week of May 20th - 26th.

A native of Wayne, PA, Minicozzi appeared in 27 games for the Squirrels during May. He reached base safely in 26 of those games and collected at least one base hit in 25 of them. He established a season-high for the Squirrels with a 15-game hit-streak, and all told raised his average more than 100 points during the period (.247 - .348). He also established a Richmond franchise record for batting average over the course of any month while having enough at-bats to qualify for the league leaders.

Through Wednesday's action, Minicozzi is leading the Eastern League batting race with an overall average of .347 (69-169). He is also third in on-base percentage (.433) and fourth in hits (69).

Minicozzi rejoined the San Francisco Giants organization when he re-signed as a minor league free agent in May of 2012. He had spent the previous three seasons in independent baseball. The Giants originally selected him out of East Carolina University in the 17th round of the 2005 MLB draft.
