New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
AKRON, Ohio - Kevin Nolan smacked a two-run homer and Deck McGuire struck out a season-high nine batters, but the Fisher Cats (28-33) fell to the Akron Aeros, 7-2, on Thursday night at Canal Park. The loss completes a sweep for the Aeros (29-31) and leaves the Fisher Cats with a five-game losing skid heading to Erie on Friday night.
Nolan wasted no time giving McGuire some early run support. After Ryan Schimpf singled with one out in the first, Nolan sent a pitch into the right field bullpen for his sixth home run and a 2-0 lead.
McGuire (L; 3-6) came out and gave up a two-run run in the bottom of the first, but he settled down after that to turn in some of his most dominant work of the season. He struck out two in the second, setting up a stretch where he retired ten in a row into the fifth inning.
McGuire came out in the sixth and that's when the trouble started. With two outs, Aguilar delivered another run-scoring single to tie the game and send McGuire to the dugout. Evan Crawford came on and the Aeros continued their two-out barrage, plating four more runs to build their lead to 6-2.
The two-out rally handed McGuire the loss despite his season-best nine strikeouts. Toru Murata (3-3) earned the win for Akron, tossing seven innings of two-run ball. He handed it over to the bullpen for two scoreless innings at the end. Akron relievers were dominant in the series allowing just two hits over 11.0 shutout innings.
The Fisher Cats will now travel northeast to begin a three-game set with Erie on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Righty Ryan Tepera (5-4, 4.50) will face Erie's Matt Crouse (4-4, 4.38). Radio coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. with Tom Gauthier on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com.
The Fisher Cats return home to face Akron and Erie for a six-game homestand on Tuesday, June 11 at 7:05 p.m. The series includes three Atlas Fireworks shows, a David Ortiz mini-bobblehead giveaway, and a Father's Day matinee with a baseball giveaway and a game of catch on the field with dad.
