Swift Current Broncos News Release
SWIFT CURRENT, SK - The Swift Current Broncos (5-11-1-2) have won back to back games for the first time this season following a 2-1 win in Regina Tuesday night, and they face a stiff test in the Lethbridge Hurricanes (14-6-0-3) Wednesday as they look to push their winning streak to three.
Tuesday, Isaac Poulter stole the show, turning in a 48-save performance and lifting the Broncos to a 2-1 win in Regina. The Broncos goaltender made 23 saves in the third period alone as the Pats ramped up the pressure looking for the tying goal.
After Ethan Regnier gave the Broncos the lead through 20 minutes, Zack Smith tied it up 4:10 into the second period. Despite being heavily outshot in the third, the Broncos took the lead.
Sergei Alkhimov found a loose puck and skated towards the blue line in the Regina end before spinning and firing it on net. The puck somehow made it's way through the five hole of Max Paddock to put the Broncos ahead for good.
It wasn't easy though, as the Pats had a 6-on-4 power play for the final 1:35, but Poulter stood tall to seal the victory for Swift Current. The win was the Broncos fifth of the year in 19 games. Last season the Broncos didn't win their fifth game until the 28th game of the year.
The Hurricanes are also coming into Wednesday's game following a win; they hammered the Vancouver Giants 6-0 Sunday afternoon to finish an abbreviated two-game road trip to the B.C. Division.
The Hurricanes have their sights set on top spot on not only the Central Division, but the entire WHL. With a victory they would tie the Edmonton Oil Kings with 33 points, but jump ahead of them with 15 wins compared to Edmonton's 14.
Wednesday is the second of seven meetings on the season between the Broncos and Hurricanes. Lethbridge won the first game two weeks ago, 4-1 at the Enmax Centre. Reece Klassen had a good game in net for the Broncos, but Swift Current had a tough time generating offence.
