Swift Current Broncos News Release
Kamloops, BC - The Swift Current Broncos (2-4-0-1) have travelled 1,100 kilometres West to make their way through the British Columbia Division, with the opening game Tuesday night against the Kamloops Blazers (5-4-0-0).
Swift Current is hoping to out a painful and frustrating loss to the Winnipeg ICE. Leading 5-1 after one period, the Broncos saw the ICE storm all the way back and force the game to a shootout, where Connor McClennon would score the lone goal of the shootout to complete the comeback.
Ethan Regnier, Ben King, Aiden Bulych, Alex Moar and Joona Kiviniemi all scored for the Broncos while Isaac Poulter had a heavy workload, turning aside 47 shots. Both King and Kiviniemi had grade A scoring chances in overtime, but Jesse Makaj was stellar in net after taking over in the first period finishing with 21 saves on 22 shots for the win.
Heading through the BC Division for the second year in a row, Swift Current is hoping for a better result than last year when they went 0-5 on the trip. The Broncos were outscored 22-10.
The Blazers have seemingly found their game after starting the season 0-3. Last weekend the Blazers claimed 3-1 and 5-2 wins in Everett and Kelowna respectively and have won five of their last six games.
Kamloops has offence spread out around their lineup and are one of just four WHL teams (Kelowna, Medicine Hat, Portland) with four players in double digits for points.
Draft-eligible forward Connor Zary leads the charge with 14 points in nine games. He was recently rated as a 'B' level prospect for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, a potential second or third-round pick.
It's been a long time since the Broncos last left Kamloops with a pair of points in tow. October 5, 2007 was the last time Swift Current won in Kamloops, a game that featured 164 minutes in penalties, four fights and a 22-save performance from Travis Yonkman in the Broncos net.
