Toronto Argonauts News Release
Mississauga - For the second consecutive season, Toronto Argonauts' K/P Noel Prefontaine has been recognized by members of the Football Reporters of Canada as the East Division's Outstanding Special Teams Player.
Remarked Prefontaine, "Considering the talent pool of special teams players in the CFL, it is an honour to represent the East Division. However, with football being the team sport that it is, this is but a small accomplishment. In order for me to be successful, I have to rely on my teammates, so this nomination is a credit my team as well."
Commented Head Coach, Michael 'Pinball' Clemons, "Prefontaine has arguably been our MVP for the last many seasons. This year has been particularly special and history may prove that he is the best two-way kicker our game has ever known. Specifically this season, he has maintained a level of consistency while playing injured in several games. He is a fierce competitor, punishing tackler and growing leader. Pre is undoubtedly one of the best players I've ever coached. 'Special' is the only word that describes him."
Potentially the most athletically gifted player on the Argo roster, 'Pre' does what most teams employ two players to do - and does them both very well. As the Argos' place kicker and punter, Prefontaine finished the 2006 CFL season as the league leader in punting average (46.3 yards/kick), was among the CFL leaders in kickoff average (60.4 yards/kick), kicked 15 consecutive field goals to start the year (the second longest streak in club history), and became the Argonauts' all-time kickoff leader late in the season. An unusually hard-hitter, Prefontaine also led all kickers with 9 special teams tackles and made several game-saving hits on returners.
The 2006 Rogers CFL Player Awards will be announced during Grey Cup week in Winnipeg on Thursday, November 16. The Awards show will be aired live on TSN from the Centennial Concert Hall beginning at 9:30 p.m. EST.
The Toronto Argonauts are North America's oldest professional football club, having celebrated their 130th anniversary in 2003. The Toronto Argonauts have 15 Grey Cup championships to their credit.
