Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be well represented at next month's Rogers CFL Player Awards, with today's announcement that three members of the team are among the finalists for the awards.

The CFL announced earlier today that running back Charles Roberts (Most Outstanding Player), linebacker Barrin Simpson (Outstanding Defensive Player) and defensive tackle Doug Brown (Outstanding Canadian) are the East Division representatives for the 2006 Rogers CFL Player Awards.

Roberts will go head-to-head with B.C. Lions wide receiver Geroy Simon for the Most Outstanding Player Award. Meanwhile, Simpson will match-up against B.C. Lions defensive lineman Brent Johnson for the Outstanding Defensive Player Award while Brown will battle it out with B.C.'s Johnson for the Outstanding Canadian Award.

The 2006 Rogers CFL Player Awards will be announced during Grey Cup week in Winnipeg on THURSDAY, NOV. 16. The Awards show will be aired live on TSN from the Centennial Concert Hall beginning at 8:00pm CST. Tickets for the Rogers CFL Player Awards are available on-line at www.ticketmaster.ca or by calling (204) 780-3333.

Charles Roberts won his third CFL rushing crown in the past four years this season. He led the league in rushing with 1,609 yards on 303 carries along with 10 touchdowns. The sixth-year running back also had 411 receiving yards on 42 receptions and was the CFL leader in yards from scrimmage with 2,020 total yards. This is the fourth consecutive time Roberts has been named Winnipeg's Outstanding Player.

Barrin Simpson proved time and again in 2006 why he was one of the CFL's most coveted free agents this past off-season. The first-year Bomber middle linebacker finished first in the CFL in defensive tackles for the fourth time in his career. He had 110 defensive tackles during the regular season and is only the third Bomber to finish with more than 100 defensive tackles in a season. He also had three quarterback sacks, eight special teams tackles and two pass knockdowns. This is the third time in his career that Simpson has been nominated for the award, including being a runner-up in 2001 as a member of the B.C. Lions.

Doug Brown enjoyed one of his best seasons since joining the Blue Bombers in 2001. He was fourth on the Bombers in defensive tackles with 51 and added two quarterback sacks. The constant pressure he applied along the Bombers' D-line is a big reason why the team is third in the CFL in quarterback sacks with 43. This is Brown's fourth nomination as he looks to win the League's Outstanding Canadian award for the second time in his career. He won it in 2001.
