Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release

WINNIPEG, MB - While overall team play was a trademark of the 2006 Winnipeg Blue Bombers, several individual players still managed to standout during the recently-concluded regular season.

Running back Charles Roberts won the CFL rushing crown for the third time in the past four seasons, rushing for 1,609 yards on a league-leading 303 carries. He was also the league-leader in combined yards (2,020 yards) and yards from scrimmage (2,020).

SB/KR Albert Johnson III was also among the league leaders in combined yardage, finishing second to Roberts with 1,992 total yards. Johnson led the league in punt returns (85) and punt return yardage (810) and was among the top kickoff returners with 1,000 yards on 50 kickoff returns.

Despite missing a couple of games due to injury, slotback Milt Stegall was once again among the top CFL pass catchers with 1,269 yards on 79 receptions. He also had the longest TD reception of the year, a 100-yard, last second catch in Edmonton that gave the Bombers a thrilling win over the Eskimos. He also closed to within two TDs of setting the new all-time CFL touchdown record with seven TD catches this season.

Linebacker Barrin Simpson was a veritable tackling machine for the Blue & Gold in '06. He led the league in defensive tackles with 110, 27 more than Reggie Hunt of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who finished second. It was the fourth time Simpson led the CFL in defensive tackles in a season. He was also among the Bomber leaders in quarterback sacks with three.

The Bombers had one of the most dominant special teams in the league in '06. That was reflected in the fact the team had three of the top six special teams tacklers in the CFL. Shawn Gallant finished tied for first in special teams tackles with 24. Kyries Hebert was tied with three other individuals for second with 23 special teams tackles while Graeme Bell was tied for sixth with 19 special teams tackles.

Other individual team leaders included cornerback Robert Bean (four interceptions returns), defensive back Anthony Malbrough (three fumble returns) and quarterback Kevin Glenn (4,112 passing yards and 22 TD passes).

Meanwhile, the Bombers' defensive dozen finished first or second in five defensive categories including fewest first downs passing allowed (185, 1st), average gain per rush allowed (4.7, 2nd), fewest yards net passing allowed (4,235), average yards passing per game (235.3) and lowest percentage of passes completed (59.3).

The Blue Bombers will take on the Toronto Argonauts this Sunday at 1 p.m. (ET) at the Rogers Centre in the Scotiabank East Semi-Final.
