(Greensboro, NC)- The West Virginia Power beat the Greensboro Grasshoppers 6-3 in 12 innings on Friday evening at NewBridge Bank Park. The Power tied the game on a home run in the ninth before plating the winnings tallies in the 12th to snap a two-game skid.
West Virginia took their first lead of the series with a run in the top of the second inning. Eric Wood reached on a leadoff double and advanced to third on a throwing error. Raul Fortunato followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Power a 1-0 advantage.
Matt Juengel hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second off West Virginia starter Tyler Glasnow to even the score at one. Greensboro took the lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Tony Caldwell.
Glasnow pitched five innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out five. Matt Milroy made the start for the Grasshoppers, tossing five as well, giving up one run on five hits while striking out eight.
The Power evened the score in the top of the seventh inning when Ashley Ponce walked and moved to second on a walk to Dilson Herrera. Josh bell reached on a throwing error charged to 'Hoppers reliever Austin Brice, allowing Ponce to score from second to tie the game at two.
Greensboro took a 3-2 in the home half of the eighth when Anthony Gomez scored on a sac fly, but West Virginia again matched that tally. With two down in the top of the ninth, Herrera hit a 2-1 pitch from Brice over the left-center wall for his sixth home run and a 3-3 score.
After the Power shut down the Grasshoppers in the bottom of the ninth, each team had opportunities to score in extra innings. In the top of the 12th inning, D.J. Crumlich and Stetson Allie each singled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Raul Fortunato hit a ground ball to pitcher Jheyson Manzueta as Crumlich broke towardsthe plate. Manzeuta's throw tipped off catcher Tony Caldwell's mitt, allowing Crumlich to score the go-ahead run. Allie then scored on a wild pitch and Fortunato crossed on a single by Kawika Emsley-Pai to give the Power a 6-3 advantage.
Ryan Hafner (4-0) pitched three scoreless innings for the win before Jhondaniel Medina, pitching for the second straight game, retired three of the four batters he faced in the bottom of the 12th for his first South Atlantic League save. Manzueta (2-2) allowed all three runs in the last inning and took the loss.
The Power and Grasshoppers play the third game of this series on Saturday. Pat Ludwig is slated to make a spot start against Chad James at 7:05 pm. The South Atlantic League All-Star break begins on June 17 with the mid-summer classic to be play on June 18 at Lakewood's FirstEnergy Park.
