Greenville Drive News Release

Pitching and defense ruled the night in Savannah on Friday, and it took 12 innings to decide a winner. Despite going nine innings in between runs, the Savannah Sand Gnats (41-26) scored the most important run and took a 2-1 victory over the Greenville Drive (22-45). With the win, the Sand Gnats clinched the Southern Division first-half title and a playoff berth. The Sand Gnats' 12th inning rally began with one out and Gerardo Olivares (1-2) on the mound, as Jeff Reynolds and Phillip Evans hit back-to-back singles. After a walk to Eudy Pina loaded the bases, Brandon Nimmo played the role of hero, as his sacrifice fly plated Reynolds for the winning run. Bret Mitchell (3-2) worked two scoreless inning of relief with three strikeouts to pick up the victory. Savannah got the first run of the game in the bottom of the second against Drive starter Jacob Dahlstrand. Maikis De la Cruz led off with a double and advanced to third on a single by Stefan Sabol. Cole Frenzel followed with an RBI groundout to the pitcher for the 1-0 lead. The Drive tied the game in the eighth inning. Mookie Betts rudely greeted new Sand Gnats pitcher Paul Sewald with a line drive single, and Jose Vinicio then doubled Betts to third. Two batters later, David Chester's groundout to shortstop plated Betts for the tying run. The extra innings spoiled terrific outings by both starting pitchers. Jacob Dahlstrand threw six innings for the Drive, allowing just one run on five hits and two walks while striking out five. Steven Matz fired five and one-third scoreless frames with 10 strikeouts. De la Cruz, Evans and Reynolds all collected two hits for Savannah. Mookie Betts led the way for Greenville with three hits. Game three of the four-game set in Savannah begins at 6:05 on Saturday night. RHP Justin Haley (3-6, 4.53) will take the mound for the Drive, while RHP Luis Cessa (3-2, 3.32) gets the start for the Sand Gnats.
