THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia lost 3-2 on Thursday night at Greensboro. The Grasshoppers scored a run in the first on a sac fly, a run in the second on a single, and added their third run in the third on a solo home run by Jesus Solarzano. The Power scored once in the sixth on a D.J. Crumlich ground out and added a run in the seventh when Walker Gourley scored on a balk. Orlando Castro took the loss despite notching his eighth quality start of the season. Josh Bell and Francisco Diaz had two hits apiece, but West Virginia went 0-10 with runners in scoring position in the defeat.
DOWN THE STRETCH WE GO: West VirginiaÂfs loss on Thursday eliminated the club from title contention in the South Atlantic LeagueÂfs first half. The Power enter play tonight in third place, three games behind Hickory and two behind Hagerstown. The Power could still finish in a tie for first place, but with three game remaining, could only match the Crawdads, who own the head-to-head tie breaker with two wins in three games against West Virginia. HagerstownÂfs game against Lakewood was postponed and the Suns remain in contention with four game left.
AH GRASSHOPPER: West Virginia continues itsÂf only 2013 series in Greensboro tonight. The Power lead the all-time set with 64 wins and 51 losses, though the Grasshoppers won the 2012 series 8-6 and have taken five of seven this year. Since 2005, West Virginia has gone 29-27 at NewBridge Bank Park.
ALL-STAR POWER: West Virginia had six players selected to represent the club in the 2013 South Atlantic League All-Star Game, including three starters. Stetson Allie will play first base, Josh Bell will start in right field, and Dilson Herrera was selected as the starting shortstop. Walker Gourley was chosen as a reserve outfielder, while pitchers Orlando Castro and Tyler Glasnow were also selected to represent the Power. West Virginia, Hickory, Hagerstown, and Augusta each had six players selected by the leagueÂfs managers, coaches, general managers, and media.
ALUMNI WATCH: Multiple reports have suggested that 2012Âfs Most Outstanding SAL prospect Gregory Polanco will be promoted to Altoona in the coming days. The All-Star outfielder is batting .312 over 57 games for Bradenton this season with six home runs and 30 runs batted in. The Marauders are now idle during the Florida State League All-Star break. Polanco was also chosen as the Topps SAL Player-of-the-Year for his efforts in 2012 (.325/16/85).
WALK-OFF LIFE: The Power have now lost in walk-off fashion four times this season, including twice in the Delmarva series. Prior to game two Wednesday night, each walk-off loss had been on a single. West Virginia has won three walk-off games this season, winning twice on home runs and once on a single.
JUNE SWOON: West Virginia is 5-7 this month after going 20-10 in May. The Power hit .270 last month, tied for the second best average in the league, but are batting .235 in June, third worst in the league. The pitching staff, however, has posted a 3.18 ERA over the first 12 games, down from 4.73 in April over 25 games and 3.62 last month.
PROMO UPDATE- JULY 4- The Power will host the Lexington Legends on July 4 at 6:05 pm. The game will be followed by a fireworks show and a concert by the Davisson Brothers Band.
POWER POINTS: With home 17th home run of the season on Tuesday, Stetson Allie has matched Mat Gamel (2006) and Andrew Lefave (2007) with the fifth-best single season home run tally in Power history... Walker Gourley went 0-3 in game one on Wednesday and saw his nine game hitting streak and 22 game on-base streak stopped. The 22-game run matched Stetson Allie for the longest by a Power player this year... TNAÂfs ImpactWrestling event is slated for 7:30 pm this evening at Appalachian Power Park. AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh dropped a 9-0 final to San Francisco on Thursday night. Charlie Morton took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits over five inning in his return from Tommy John surgery... Indianapolis was tripped up by Durham 10-7... AltoonaÂfs game at New Britain was postponed due to rain... Bradenton split a doubleheader with Lakeland, losing game one 7-6 and winning game two 9-5 in 11 innings.
