Hader Locks Down Crawdads in 7-4 Shorebirds Win

Hickory, N.C. - In his final start before his appearance in the 2013 South Atlantic League All-Star Game, Josh Hader led the Delmarva Shorebirds (29-36) to a 7-4 win over the Hickory Crawdads (38-30) on Friday night at L.P. Frans Stadium. The Shorebirds held the Crawdads to just five total hits.

In 6.1 innings pitched, Hader allowed one hit and one earned run. Hader did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. He struck out six batters and walked three.

The Shorebirds jumped to an early lead in the first inning. Lucas Herbst drew a lead off walk and scored on a double by Tucker Nathans. Later in the inning, Nik Balog hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Nathans to give the Shorebirds a 2-0 lead.

Hickory tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning on a two-run single by Jorge Alfaro.

The Shorebirds regained the lead in the sixth inning with four runs on three hits. With the bases loaded, Roderick Bernadina singled to score Creede Simpson. Then, Adrian Marin hit a two-run single to put the Shorebirds in front 5-2. Bernadina later scored on a groundout to short by Gregory Lorenzo.

Hickory fought back in the eighth inning when Ryan Rua connected on his 20th home run of the season to trim the deficit to 6-4.

In the ninth inning, the Shorebirds added an insurance run on a single by Nathans to score Lorenzo, who reached on an error by Luis Marte.

Sander Beck entered in the bottom of the ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season.

Nathans went 2-for-4 with two runs-batted-in.

The Shorebirds and Crawdads play game three of the series on Saturday, June 15 at 7:00pm.
