HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Lakewood BlueClaws (26-38) scored two runs early, plated the final nine and took home the series opener, 11-5, over the Hagerstown Suns (35-29) Friday night at Municipal Stadium. The win marked the second in seven games against the Suns this season.
The BlueClaws trailed 5-2 with two down in the seventh, but worked a little two-out magic and tied the game at five. Ian Dickson was cruising through his first appearance in the Washington system before he walked both Roman Quinn and Carlos Tocci and extended the inning.
The homerless Mitch Walding was next to face Dickson. The third baseman ended his drought with a three-run blast to right center field and pulled the 'Claws even at 5-5.
The 'Claws continued to pile on the runs and took the lead for good in the eighth. Willie Carmona doubled to lead off the inning and two hitters later Bryan Harper drilled Chace Numata with a pitch, and followed by walking Brian Pointer to load the bases.
Alejandro Villalobos broke the tie with an RBI single to right that plated the pinch runner Zach Taylor from third and gave the BlueClaws the 6-5 lead. Roman Quinn was next and he singled home a pair and pushed the lead to three at 8-5.
Numata capped off the BlueClaws scoring in the game with a three-run double in the ninth, which put Lakewood in front by the final 11-5.
Both teams got the scoring going early and jumped on the board with two runs in the first inning.
For the BlueClaws it was Willie Carmona cashing in with a two run single that plated Walding and Art Charles and gave the BlueClaws the early, however brief 2-0 over Nick Lee and the Suns.
In the bottom of the first, Jonathan Musser gave up a leadoff base single and walked the second batter to put two on with no outs. The righty settled in and retired the next two hitters, but Will Piwnica-Worms singled to right and tied the game at 2-2.
With the game still tied in the third, it was the Suns that plated three runs, and put the BlueClaws on the ropes. Khayyan Norfork broke the tie with a leadoff solo shot to center off of Lakewood starter Jonathan Musser and two batters later, Brandon Miller knocked home Estarlin Martinez with a double and gave the Suns the 4-2 lead.
Matt Foat capped off the scoring with a ground rule double to center that plated Miller and upped the Hagerstown lead to three.
The BlueClaws had no answer for the Suns starter after the first inning and were kept off the scoreboard until the seventh. Lee, the southpaw pitched the first five innings and allowed just two runs, both earned, on six hits and a walk; he added three strikeouts.
Dickson pitched two innings and took home the blown save when he allowed the homer to Walding. Harper (3-1) struggled in his two frames, allowed six runs on five hits, and took the loss.
Musser lasted just three frames on the night and allowed all of the Hagerstown runs. The righty gave up the five runs, four earned, on six hits; he walked one and struck out three.
Jeb Stefan was the first out of the 'pen and delivered three scoreless innings before Luis Paulino took over in the seventh. Paulino (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings and Delvi Francisco closed it out in the ninth.
