Asheville Wins Another Nail-Biter over Lexington, 3-2

Asheville, NC--The Asheville Tourists and the Lexington Legends have played a total of 11 games against each other this season, and Friday night was the tenth time the final score was decided by three runs or less. For the second game in a row, the Tourists overcame a late deficit to win at McCormick Field.

The Legends took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Fred Ford and Mark Threlkeld hit back-to- back doubles to lead off the inning but the Tourists starting pitcher, Shane Broyles, worked out of the inning without surrendering any further damage. Lexington added one more in the fourth on Threlkeld's first Home Run of the season.

After squandering a couple of early scoring opportunities, Asheville's centerfielder, Max White, came up with a two-out RBI double in the sixth to cut into the Legends lead. In the top of the seventh inning, Humberto Arteaga hit a shallow fly ball to left field with Raul Mondesi at first base. Dillon Thomas raced in and made a diving catch to retire Arteaga, then threw to first to double off Mondesi.

The momentum turned on that play as Asheville came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with an edge. After Jason Stolz reached on an error to begin the frame, Matt Wessinger dropped down a sacrifice bunt. White followed with an RBI single to left to tie the game 2-2, but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.

With two outs and the bases empty, Rosell Herrera worked a 3-1 count against Legends starter Christian Binford. Herrera waited back on a breaking ball and crushed it over the scoreboard in right-center for his 13th Home Run of the season. The solo shot vaulted the home team in front for good.

Patrick Johnson, Brook Hart, and Rayan Gonzalez combined to toss three shutout innings in relief. Gonzalez worked a one, two, three ninth inning to earn his sixth save of the season. Asheville and Lexington are set for Game Three on Saturday night with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05pm.
