Power Whitewashed by Hickory 7-0

The West Virginia Power were shutout 7-0 by the Hickory Crawdads at Appalachian Power Park on Sunday afternoon. The Crawdads used three pitchers to blank the Power for the second time in this four-game series.

Starting pitchers Robby Rowland and Kevin Matthews traded zeros over the first three innings. Hickory scattered six hits off Rowland over the first three frames while the Power managed one hit in each of the first three innings against Matthews.

In the top of the fourth, Drew Robinson doubled with one out. Two batters later, Jordan Akins singled in Robinson for a 1-0 Hickory lead.

Rowland left the game on the hook for the loss with two down in the top of the fifth. Hickory scored four times in the seventh and twice more in the eighth against West Virginia's bullpen to cap the scoring. Orlando Castro retired the first four batters he faced, but surrendered four runs on four hits and an error in the seventh. Rinku Singh allowed the two eighth inning runs on two hits and a walk.

West Virginia only had three hits and didn't have a base runner after Francisco Diaz reached on an error in the fifth inning.

Rowland (8-5) took the loss after allowing one run on nine hits over four and two-thirds. Matthews (3-4) pitched the first five innings for the win and the Crawdads got two scoreless innings apiece from Greg Williams, a Marshal product, and Santo Perez.

West Virginia is off on Monday and opens its' final road trip of the season on Tuesday at Charleston, SC. The Power return to Appalachian Power Park on Friday, August 31, to host the Delmarva Shorebirds in game one of the final series of the regular season.
