Power Takes 9-1 Victory over Delmarva

The West Virginia Power earned a 9-1 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park. Porfirio Lopez pitched five shutout innings and the Power offense backed him with nine runs on 11 hits.

West Virginia took an early lead in the bottom of the first when Mel Rojas Jr. walked with two outs and score two pitches later on Justin Howard's 32nd double of the season.

In the fourth, the Power tacked on two more. Rojas Jr. singled to lead off the inning, moved to third when Justin Howard walked and Shorebird catcher Michael Ohlman threw errantly to second, and scored on a Dan Grovatt ground out. Howard later crossed on a single by Chase Lyles.

Lopez allowing just three hits while striking out five over his five innings of work. Lopez's strong start came one night after Power starter Eliecer Navarro allow two runs on five hits over six innings in a West Virginia win.

Each team scored a run in the sixth inning, and West Virginia added an additional tally in the seventh before sealing the victory with four runs in the bottom of the eighth. After Elias Diaz doubled, Grovatt hit a home run to right, his eighth of the season. After Lyles walked, Rogelio Noris tripled in a run and scored on a ground out to cap the scoring at 9-1.

Lopez (2-4) garnered the win, while Delmarva starter Parker Bridwell (0-1) was charged with the loss after surrendering four runs, three earned, on six hit over five and two thirds. Grovatt paced the offense with three runs batted in and has matched Howard with a team-high 56. Three Power players had two hits each as West Virginia won its second straight.

The Power and Shorebirds conclude this set on Sunday at 2:05 pm. Zack Dodson, 3-0 this month< will start for West Virginia against Delmarva's Tim Berry.
