Power Drop Shorebirds 9-1 in Game Three

Salisbury, Md. - The West Virginia Power (59-64, 25-30) used a steady attack at the plate and solid pitching to sprint past the Delmarva Shorebirds (54-71, 19-36) 9-1 at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday night. The Shorebirds fell to 2-5 on the current road trip. Ty Kelly, 3-for-4, was the only Shorebirds player with multiple hits.

The Power got on the board in the first inning against Parker Bridwell. Justin Howard hit a two-out double to score Mel Rojas, Jr.

West Virginia added two runs in the fourth inning. With runners at first and third, Dan Grovatt hit a grounder to second to score Rojas, Jr. Then, Chase Lyles hit a two-out single to plate Howard to increase the lead to 3-0.

The Shorebirds trimmed the deficit to 3-1 in the sixth off relief pitcher Rinku Singh, who was the winner of the "Million Dollar Arm" reality show based in India. Brenden Webb reached first on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a single by Ty Kelly. After stealing third base, he scored on a bases loaded walk by Jeremy Nowak.

West Virginia tallied one run in the sixth and one run in the seventh to increase the lead to 5-1.

Shorebirds starter Bridwell, who was pitching in the South Atlantic League for the first time since June 11, lasted 5.2 innings and allowed six hits and three earned runs.

The Power put the game out of reach with four runs in the eighth inning. Grovatt connected on a two-run homer to right field off Ryan Palsha to stretch the lead to 7-1. Rogelio Noris hit an RBI triple to right field and Drew Maggi hit a groundout RBI to first to increase the lead to 9-1.

Cameron Roth came on for Palsha with a runner at third and nobody out in the eighth. He did not allow a hit.

Power starter Porfirio Lopez earned the win over five shutout innings. He allowed three hits.

The Shorebirds finish off the road trip with the series finale against the Power on Sunday, August 21 at 2:05 p.m. LHP Tim Berry is the scheduled starter for the Shorebirds.
