Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Taylor Rogers delivered another masterpiece for the Augusta GreenJackets, firing six innings to win his third straight as the GreenJackets defeated the Charleston RiverDogs 6-3 in front of 4, 994 on Saturday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium to give the GreenJackets their 11th win in their last 14 games.
The GreenJackets gave Rogers a big lead in the second inning, scoring four times as each of the first five hitters in the inning reached base safely. With Ryan Lollis at second base, Josh Mazzola singled to third and Lollis scored on a throwing error at the end of the play to give Augusta a 1-0 lead. Devin Harris doubled home a second run later in the inning and Joel Weeks singled home two more to double the lead to 4-0. The GreenJackets got another in the fifth on Lollis's RBI single to go up by five.
Rogers (10-9) fired six strong innings for the GreenJackets in his third straight win, allowing just one run on a sixth inning RBI double by Kelvin DeLeon. Rogers allowed four hits and didn't walk a batter, striking out a pair. In his last three starts, Rogers has allowed just two earned runs in 21 innings.
After the GreenJackets got a seventh-inning run on a wild pitch to grow their lead to five, the RiverDogs threatened to get back into the game in the eighth. Charleston scored twice on a passed ball and a throwing error to cut Augusta's lead to 6-3. Jose Valdez retired the last three hitters of the inning to send things to the ninth, where Brett Bochy made it interesting by putting a pair on and bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs. Jose Toussen struck out looking on a fastball seared on the outside corner as Bochy stuck out the side in the ninth to earn his seventh save of the year.
Charleston starter Shane Greene (4-12) took the loss for the RiverDogs, allowing six runs on eight hits and three walks in seven innings while striking out seven.
With the win, the GreenJackets improve to 12-5 against the RiverDogs headed into Sunday's season series finale between the two teams. Mike Kickham (4-8, 4.50) takes the ball for the GreenJackets in search of the series win while Mike Gipson (0-1, 2.00) heads to the mound for the RiverDogs to try and earn the series split. First pitch comes at 5:35 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 5:20, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
