Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (Aug. 20, 2011) -- Trayce Thompson blasted two home runs, and Spencer Arroyo spun eight strong innings as the Kannapolis Intimidators defeated the Hagerstown Suns, 6-2, on Saturday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. Kannapolis improved its lead in the 2nd Half Northern Division standings to 2.0 games ahead of second-place Hagerstown with the series finale on Sunday.
Thompson finished the night 2-for-4 and matched a season-high with four RBI. Carlos Sanchez and Leighton Pangilinan added RBI-doubles for the Intimidators offense.
Arroyo (9-8) allowed two runs on four hits while striking out five batters and walking one over eight innings to earn the win. At one point, the left-hander retired 16 of 17 batters from the second inning through the seventh, and he tossed five 1-2-3 innings on the night.
Keenyn Walker led off the bottom of the first with a double, and Sanchez cashed him in. After a walk to Dan Black, Thompson blasted a three-run home run (22) to left-center field for an early 4-0 advantage.
Marcus Semien doubled down the left field line in the bottom of the fourth, and Pangilinan brought him home on a double to the gap in right-center field for a 5-1 lead.
Hagerstown's Jason Martinson led off the fifth inning with a home run (16), but Thompson responded with his second long ball (23) of the night to begin the bottom of the sixth.
Steven Upchurch tossed a scoreless ninth inning for the Intimidators. The game lasted 2 hours and 2 minutes, the fastest of the season for Kannapolis, beating the season opener in Lakewood on April 7 by one minute.
Kannapolis and Hagerstown wrap up the series on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. Sunday's game is Teacher Appreciation Night, and the Intimidators will donate $1 of every ticket sold for fans that mention school when purchasing their tickets.
